BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. – Dane Johnson scored a game high 21 points, helping #12 Warner Pacific escape senior night with a 68-67 win over Corban University tonight at Bart Valentine Court.

The contest was close from start to finish, with 11 lead changes on the night. The largest lead by the visiting Warriors (16-12, 8-8 CCC) was seven early in the game, and the Knights (21-6, 13-3 CCC) managed a six point advantage late in the second period.

Warner Pacific had to overcome a slow start, as the hosts missed their first six shot attempts and found themselves down 0-7 after three minutes of play. Fighting back, Diego Herrejon scored from close range to make the score 11-11 at the 13:55 mark and the fight was on. As the first half clock was winding down a pair of free throws from Corban’s James Green tied the game at 31-31, but Johnson sent WP into the locker rooms with a two point lead with a tough runner in the lane.

The second half saw the team trading buckets for the first ten minutes, and the game was tied for the 10th time at 56-56 after a Biniam Tadele runout and layup for Warner Pacific. With 2:57 showing on the clock Johnson again broke free for a score at the rim to give the Knights a six point lead, only to see Jordan Carter come right back for Corban with a clutch three pointer to make the score 67-64. Later, Jeremy Jones made one of two free throws to provide WP with a four point margin, but Carter again found space on the perimeter and buried a trey on the next possession.

A Corban foul sent William Sharp to the line with 14 seconds to play. The senior came up short on his attempt and the Warriors had a chance to steal the win. The Knights defense rose to the occasion however, as Sharp knocked the ball loose momentarily and Corban was not able to get a look at the basket before the buzzer sounded.

Johnson added nine assists to his game high 21 points for Warner Pacific. Tadele contributed 15 points, while Jones dropped in nine points in his second game back from injury.

Corban was led by Dustin Moore with 20 points, who hit all eight of his attempts from the floor including 4 of 4 from behind the arc. Carter finished with 18 points and seven assists.

Seniors Dane Johnson, Treavone Bowie, Nathan Graham, Andrey Orlov, and Biniam Tadele were honored before the game.
