REDDING, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team upset No. 8 Concordia-Irvine Saturday, 2-1, at the Simpson Invitational.

The Mountaineers (3-3) split their games at the invitational, finishing 1-2 Saturday. EOU started last season 0-7. Five of the six teams Eastern played at the tournament appeared in the NAIA national poll, and the Mountaineers went 3-2 in those games.

Eastern opened the second day of the invitational with a 5-4 setback in eight innings to William Jessup. Sarah Jackson went 3-for-4 for the Mountaineers with a pair of home runs. Kayla Anderson was recorded with the loss.

Saturday's second game was the 2-1 upset over Concordia-Irvine. Alex Hillmick was credited with the win. Emily Anderson was 3-for-4 with two runs. Cassie Wendt went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Mountaineers' final game was a 3-2 loss to Holy Names. Jackson hit another home run and was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Abby Barr took the loss on the mound.

“The last game was kind of a trap-game for us coming off of the big win,” EOU head coach Aaron Jackson said. “We were a few plays or calls from 5-1 on the weekend. I am pleased with our performance overall though.”

Eastern has a break before its next game on Feb. 24 against Dickinson State. DSU is two spots out the top 25. The doubleheader will be played at The College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho.
