CLACKAMAS, Ore.--British Columbia walked away with two wins while the host Cavaliers from Concordia University dropped a pair in the opening day of action at the Northwest Cup held at Hood View Park on Friday.

Game 1: British Columbia 3, Concordia 1

A three-run shot to left by Jess Hodge was all British Columbia would need as the Thunderbirds dropped Concordia 3-1 in the opening game of action at the Northwest Cup held at Hood View Park on Friday.

Trailing 1-0, Hodge’s shot plated teammates Brittney Meyers and Yasmin Bains for the lead. Nicole Day pitched the first four innings, giving up a single run on five hits to pick up the win, while teammate Jamie Randall picked up the save by closing out the Cavs through the final three frames.

Concordia’s lone run occurred in the second inning as Jordyn Brown scored on a wild pitch after singling up the middle and advancing through the bases on a sacrifice bunt from Kate Santos and a grounder to first from Breeanne Larkin.  Concordia outhit the T-Birds 9-to-5 in the game but stranded 13 runners in the 7-inning affair. Ashley Suter took the loss while Lacey Romo allowed just one hit over the final three stanzas.

Game 2: College of Idaho 2, Whitworth 1

In a pitchers' duel, the Yotes prevailed 2-1 over Whitworth in their first game at the Northwest Cup on Friday. The Whitworth Pirates opened the scoring in the top of the first after four walks in the inning gave them the early score. However, C of I pitcher Nickayla Skinner settled in after that, posting strikeouts for 11 of the first 15 outs in the game.

Meanwhile, a single from Kristen Haugen in the bottom of the fourth scored Alexis Macias from second to tie the game at 1-1. That score remained into the final inning with the Yotes ending a Whitworth threat in the top half with runners on second and third. Then, the Yotes' Nikki Shumway ended the game with a walk-off home run to centerfield. Whitworth centerfielder Sacha Fritz appeared to rob the home run, but went through the fence and dropped the ball.

At pitcher, Skinner pitched the complete game to earn the win, while Whitworth starter Riley Fritz took the loss.

Game 3: Whitworth 11, Concordia 9

After stranding 13 runners in the opener, Concordia left 14 runners on as Whitworth held on for a 11-9 win. The Cavaliers spotted the Pirates a 9-0 lead with Whitworth taking full advantage of several walks and CU errors through the first nine outs.

Four of the first five Whitworth batters reached home plate in the first as back-to-back walks and a hit batter went around to score. Jessica Ross and Riley Fritz cleaned up the basepaths with RBI singles in the top of the first while Sacha Clow and Heather Hesselgesser notched RBI hits in the second frame.

Affter nearly seeing the game end prematurely due to the 8-run mercy rule, Concordia chipped back into the game with two runs each in the bottom of the second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

The Cavs pounded out 18 hits compared to six for the Pirates but couldn’t overcome the early deficit after stranding the bases loaded in two separate innings.

Parr was the lone Whitworth hitter to garner a multi-hit game while Sam Genskey led the Cavs with a 4-for-5 night at the plate. Kyndell Andrews and Kate Santos went both tallied three hits apiece.

Despite allowing seven runs, Fritz grabbed the win after hurling the final 4.2 innings. The Cavs used four pitchers with only four of the runs scored as earned runs as CU committed four errors in the field.

Game 4: British Columbia 8, College of Idaho 6

Down to their final out in the top of the seventh, British Columbia lead-off hitter Brittany Meyers turned the game on its head with a three-run shot to left field to lead her team to an 8-6 win at the Northwest Cup on Friday.

Meyers' heroics came after The College of Idaho had comeback in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead heading into the final inning. The Yotes' Kristen Haugen tied the score at 5-5 initially with her own home run to left field. Nikki Shumway then scored the go-ahead run for the Yotes off a single up the middle of the infield from teammate Molly Mills.

Unfortunately for C of I, Meyers' blast erased the comeback as Meyers finished the day 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. At pitcher, British Columbia's Leigh Della Siega picked up the win, while Janelle Wiebold received the loss.
