Four More Concordia Records Fall in Final Tune-Up
MOSCOW, Idaho—In the final major weekend of competition before heading out to the NAIA Indoor National Championships, the Concordia men’s track & field team set four new school records at the Vandal Collegiate held at the Kibbie Indoor on Saturday.
New marks were established in the 200, 400, mile and the 1,600-meter relay.
In what turned out to be one of the briefest stints in top of the record books, the CU 200-meter dash record was toppled twice in a matter of minutes. Andre Washington took down the former record with a 22.81, the first CU athlete to crack 23 seconds in the event during an indoor season, only to see teammate Justin Oliveri nip the time by .01 in the very next heat.
Oliveri also posted a season best in the 60 with a 7.19 in the prelims to improve upon his No. 3-rated mark in school history.
In the 400, a pair of sprinters became the first Cavaliers to crack the 50-second barrier and abolishing the former school mark of 50.06 which was set by Curtis Parrish in 2009. Jasen Brown cruised to a fourth-place finish with a 49.47 to skim more than half of a second of the former mark while Edgar Vazquez crossed in 49.49 to nearly replicate the feat.
Already the owner of the school’s all-time best performance in the 3,000 and the 5,000, Matthew Clowes clipped nearly three full seconds off the mile mark with a 4:11.57 in a runner-up result to Washington State’s Lee George (4:11.40). Clowes earned his third NAIA auto mark of the year with the nation’s No. 10 performance in the event. Clowes’ times in his longer two races hold up as No. 2 in the NAIA. Also in the race, Cordero Cisneros posted the school’s No. 4-ranked time with a 4:16.55.
Broken for the fourth time this year already, the 1,600 relay team consisting of James Ratliff and Jordan Reeher, along with Vazquez and Washington, clocked a 3:20.06 to likely punch a ticket to nationals. The quartet edged the former record of 3:20.60 which was earned at the UW Indoor last weekend.
On the women’s side, Junia Limage won the 400-meter run with a 56.95 to earn NAIA ‘A’ status. Limage’s time enters the all-time CU performance list at No. 2 while establishing the No. 8 time in the NAIA.
In the mile, Lauren Moran finished in second place with a 5:10.81 while teammate Sarah Whybark rewrote a personal best with a 5:16.75. Natalie Ball chopped a second off her season best in the 800 with a 2:21.46 to join Ball with marks just shy of the NAIA provisional barrier.
Senior hurdler Eunice Makinde set a new career best in the flat 60-meter dash with an 8.22 and narrowly missed a double PR with an 8.95 in the 60 hurdles, just shy of her 8.92 she posted at the 2010 National Championships.
Several Cavaliers competing closer to home by taking part of the Warner Pacific 50/50 held at David Douglas H.S. and the CU Throw Center.
Multiple Cavaliers recorded season-best marks, including Eric Whalen (54-11 1/2), Nate Moses (52-10) and Anthony Lantz (50-8 1/4) in the shot put. In the weight throw, Matt Webster was measured in 55-4 1/4 to add more than a foot to his season best. In the women’s weight throw, Sharayah Kenady launched a 51-3 1/2 for a season best while Breezy Wentz added more than three feet to her previous long in 2012.
