Corban, Concordia, College of Idaho Crowd Weekly Winners

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- Three schools are represented in this week's Red Lion Cascade Collegiate Conference Athletes of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19, the conference office announced Monday.

The honorees:

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Corban University’s Shayla Fetters, a 5-5 senior guard from Gresham, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Fetters helped Corban capture its first-ever outright CCC regular season crown thanks to a combined 42 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and four steals in wins over Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech. The first-year Warrior was a combined 15-for-27 from the field, 8-for-13 from three-point range, and 4-for-9 at the free throw line.

This weekend's highlight came against Oregon Tech when Fetters hit a leaning, half-court shot to beat the first half buzzer in the Warriors' CCC-clinching win over the Hustlin' Owls.

Honorable mention: Lexi Amundsen, Concordia; Angelica Cahee, Southern Oregon; Jessica Edge, Evergreen; Tina Fakahafua, College of Idaho; Domi Mendezona, Northwest; Kyle Miller, Eastern Oregon; Lindsey Shearer, Northwest Christian; Katie Smith, Warner Pacific.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Corban University’s Jordan Carter, a 6-2 sophomore guard from Salem, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Carter had the best weekend of his young career against nationally-ranked Southern Oregon and No. 1-ranked Oregon Tech. The second-year Warrior combined for 70 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists in the two victories.

Carter was a combined 18-for-28 from the field, 11-for-15 from three-point range, and 23-for-27 at the line. The 6-foot-2 guard scored career-highs in both games and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career in Corban's upset over top-ranked Oregon Tech on Saturday.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK

Concordia University’s Junia Limage, a junior from Vancouver, Wash., has been named the Red Lion Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Limage won the open 400 meters at the University of Idaho Vandal Collegiate on Saturday with a 56.95 effort. The time moves her into the No. 2 spot on Concordia's all-time indoor performance list and into the No. 11 spot on the NAIA indoor performance list.

Limage earned the NAIA ‘A' qualifier with her performance, giving her four auto individual marks this year along with the 600, 800 and the 1,000-meter run.

Honorable mention: Christi Avery, Warner Pacific; Karissa Carlson, Evergreen; Alma Garcilazo, Eastern Oregon.

WOMEN'S INDOOR FIELD

Concordia University’s Sharayah Kenady, a junior from Salem, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Kenady improved upon her NAIA auto-qualifying mark in the weight throw with a 51 feet, 3.5 inch effort at the Warner Pacific 50/50 meet this weekend. She finished second in the event.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK

Concordia University’s Matthew Clowes, a freshman from Stoke-on-Trent, England, has been named the Red Lion Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Clowes, already the owner of the indoor school mark in the 3,000 and the 5,000 meter races, which are both currently ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, set his third indoor school record of the year this week with a 4:11.57 in the mile at the University of Idaho Vandal Collegiate on Saturday.

Clowes placed second overall to Washington State's Lee George (4:11.40) while his time shaved almost three full seconds off the former school mark of 4:14.52. He has now reached the NAIA automatic qualifying standard in four individual events the 800 meters, mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters.

Honorable mention: Brain Bragg, Eastern Oregon; Ka’imi Scott, Warner Pacific.

MEN'S INDOOR FIELD

Concordia’s Eric Whalen, a senior from Tualatin, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Whalen set a season best with a 54 feet, 11.5 inch heave in the shot put at the Warner Pacific 50/50 Invitational this week. The mark is the No. 7 distance in the NAIA, upping the senior's standing by four places.

Honorable mention: Robbie Haynie, Eastern Oregon.

BASEBALL PITCHER

Corban’s Jake Balbas, a junior from Meridian, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Balbas helped lead Corban to a perfect weekend, as he started the weekend with a one-hit shutout over NCAA Div. 3-member Lewis & Clark. The third-year Warrior allowed a one fourth inning single to the Pioneers, while striking out a game-high seven LCC batters.

Honorable mention: Joshua Orr, College of Idaho.

BASEBALL PLAYER

Corban’s Marc Gallegos, a freshman from Astoria, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Gallegos put together another solid weekend for Corban, as the first-year Warrior collected a hit in each game going a combined 8-for-15 at the plate with four runs scored and four RBI.

Gallegos was also perfect on the base paths for the second straight weekend stealing six bases in six attempts.

Honorable mention: Isaac Garsez, College of Idaho.

SOFTBALL PITCHER

College of Idaho’s Nickayla Skinner, a sophomore from Mountain Home, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Softball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Skinner helped the Lady Yotes to three wins over the week. She allowed just two hits and struck out 13 batters in the rain against Whitworth. The sophomore then battled an ankle injury from Friday night to pick up a win and a save Sunday vs. Willamette and Lewis and Clark.

In nine innings, Skinner allowed two hits and one run. She struck out 17 batters and had an 0.00 ERA for the week.

Honorable mention: Taylor Schmidt, Oregon Tech; Chelsea Schriber, Corban; Ashley Suter, Concordia.

SOFTBALL PLAYER

Corban’s Stephanie Nippert, a junior centerfielder from Rocklin, Calif., has been named the Red Lion Softball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 19.

Nippert continues her season-opening tear, as she helped lead Corban's No. 23-ranked team to four wins in four games at the Northwest Cup. The third-year Warrior was a combined 9-for-13 at the plate with eight runs scored, four home runs, and 13 runs batted in.

In Game 2 against British Columbia, Nippert was 3-for-3 with a home run and a pair of doubles. She scored three times in that game, and had five RBI.
