Northwest's Greene Named CoSIDA Academic All-American
TOWNSON, Maryland - Northwest University's Michael Greene of Bellingham, Wash., was named to the Capital One CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-American second team for the college division of basketball as announced by the national office today.
Greene was the only representative from the Cascade Conference and the West Coast to be selected and joins senior Garth Hamilton of Morningside College, sophomore Brad Karp of Saint Xavier University, senior Derek Kingshott of Cornerstone University and junior Daniel Van Kalsbeek of Northwestern (Iowa) College.
Said Coach John Van Dyke about his selection, "Michael epitomizes being what a student-athlete is all about. He is a fantastic player and student, but in reality he is even a better person. He is truly deserving of this award."
Greene, a finance and accounting major, maintains a 3.9 grade point average while a starter on the No. 10 ranked Northwest University team which just finished the season 25-3 and co-champions of the Cascade Conference. Michael is the Eagles' fourth leading scorer averaging 11.3 points per game and is the team's leading rebounder with a 7.1 rebounds per game average. He also leads the team in field goal percentage and free throw shooting at a .627 and .747 average respectively.
Junior guard Casey Coons of Taylor University and senior Jennifer Jorgensen of Grand View University headline the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Joining Coons on the men’s first team are Kevin Dawson of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Chris Donnelly of Saint Ambrose University, Coleson Rakestraw of John Brown University and Andy Schweitzer of Nebraska Wesleyan University.
Dawson, a senior health and exercise science major from Fort Wayne, Ind., has a 3.99 grade point average. A senior industrial engineering major with a 3.70 G.P.A., Donnelly is a native of Peoria, Ill. Rakestraw, a junior engineering major with a 3.93 G.P.A., has started every game of his career for John Brown University. A senior accounting and economics major with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A., Schweitzer has led Nebraska Wesleyan to a 12-13 record and the number six seed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
The Capital One College Division Academic All-America® basketball teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
