Raiders Fall 6-1 to Simpson in SOU Tournament Finale

MEDFORD – With snow canceling the final slate of games, the Southern Oregon softball team closed out the 2012 SOU Tournament with a 6-1 loss to Simpson Saturday at US Cellular Fields.
Southern Oregon falls to 6-4 overall this season after finishing the weekend with a 3-1 tournament mark. The Raiders return to action next week, when they will travel to Arizona for the Tuscon Invitational, with six games scheduled for March 2 and 3.
Jessica Flores started and took the loss for the Raiders, giving up one earned run in 2.1 innings. Hayley Rodriguez earned the win for Simpson, pitching all seven innings and yielding only one run on six hits.
Jordyn Kurtz finished with two of SOU’s six hits in the game, while Brooke Quaife tallied a pair of hits for Simpson. The Red Hawks scored two runs in both the first and third innings and added one more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
Southern Oregon responded with its only run of the game in the top of the sixth. Melissa Corn led off with a triple down the left field line, and two outs later Kurtz knocked a double to center to score Kurtz and make it 5-1. Simpson added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to reach the final tally.
