NAMPA, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University women's and men's track and field teams began the 2012 indoor season at the Boise State University Bronco Classic Saturday.
Alma Garcilazo and Brian Bragg hit NAIA Indoor National Championship auto-qualifying marks at the meet. Garcilazo ran to a fifth place finish in the women's 800 meters. The junior's time of 2:16.35, qualifies her for the national championship meet for the fourth straight year.
Bragg ran a lifetime best of 4:19.78 in the men's mile, nearly seven seconds faster than his previous top time. The senior won the second heat with the third best indoor mile time in EOU history.
Karlee Coffey met the women's mile NAIA Indoor National Championship provisional-qualifying standard of 5:13.40 with a time of 5:13.33. The junior also ran the first 800-meter race of her career, turning in a time of 2:29.52. The mark ranks her third on the EOU indoor all-time list.
Kadie Booth set a new school record in the women's 60 meters. The sophomore ran to an 8.03 finish, breaking last year's 8.04 record set by Brittany Sims. Kelsey Kinzer finished in the 60-meter finals with Booth with a time of 8.19, which is fourth on the EOU all-time list.
Booth and Kinzer would later finish first and second in their 200-meter heat with times of 26.46 and 26.78, third and sixth all-time on the EOU list. Kimmy Moore won her heat in the same event with a time of 26.55, fourth on the all-time school list. The senior also nearly missed a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles.
In other women's events, Sarah Beck matched her outdoor pole vault personal best with a jump of 9 feet, 6.25 inches. Allison Rodgers jumped 15 feet, 8.25 inches in the long jump. Allison Escobar ran 28.46 in the 200 meters and 65.12 in the 400 meters. Leigh Anne MacCarthy made her indoor debut running 11:06.75 in the 3,000 meters.
To women wrapped up the competition with a solid performance in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Moore, Booth, Garcilazo and Escobar closed out the meet with the third fastest time in school history (4:04.29) and a second place finish in second heat.
Robbie Haynie set a new personal record in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds, fourth on the EOU all-time list. In between rounds of the hurdles, Haynie jumped 16 feet, 8.75 inches to finish third in the pole vault. He saved his best performance of the meet for the triple jump, where he placed fourth.
In his first indoor triple jump competition as a Mountaineer, Haynie demolished Damian Johnson's 2004 school record of 44 feet, 7.5 inches with a top mark of 46 feet, 9.5 inches. The mark is the ninth best in the NAIA. The effort is just 1.5 inches off the NAIA auto- qualifying standard.
Eastern returns to Nampa, next Saturday, for the Boise State University Team Challenge.
