Cavs Continue to Set School Records in Idaho
Vandal Indoor Invitational Recap
NAMPA, Idaho—For the third straight meet, Concordia’s NyEma Sims has erased a school record. This time it was one of the newer marks in the books. After shaving more than a full tenth of a second off the school mark in the 60-meter dash last week, Sims repeated the performance with a meet-winning 7.42 at the Vandal Indoor Invitational on Friday.
Racing to a 7.53 last week, Sims nearly matched the effort with a 7.56 in the preliminary round before smashing her own mark by .11. Sims’ new time is the second fastest recorded so far this season by an NAIA athlete with only Oklahoma Baptist’s Jura Levy crossing with a nation-leading 738 while competing at the Iowa State Open.
The Cavs received a second winning performance in the triple jump as Branko Djuricic soared 46-9 1/2 (14.26m) for the top distance of the day. Djuricic’s mark fell just shy of the NAIA automatic qualifying standard (14.30m).
Two more school records were established as Jasen Brown ran a 1:52.28 in the 800 to snip the former record of 1:52.57 which was set by current teammate Cory Pena. Like Sims, Brown’s mark (converted to 1:52.88 due to running on an oversized track) is ranked No. 2 in the NAIA with the top time a 1:52.76 by Oklahoma Baptist’s Dewayne Booker.
In the final event of the day, the men’s 1,600-meter relay team clocked a 3:20.86 to place fourth overall. The quartet comprised of James Ratliff, Jordan Reeher, Andre Washington and Edgar Vazquez chopped more than a full second faster than the school turned out earlier in the season.
Despite seeing his school record fall, Pena recorded a top mark of his own with a personal-record 4:15.74 in the mile, just shy of Martin Romero-Clark’s 4:14.52 which was set in 2010. Pena’s converted time holds the No. 7 ranking in the NAIA.
Running a season-best, Eunice Makinde improved her NAIA ‘A’ mark with a 9.02 in the 60-meter hurdles. Makinde’s mark actually occurred in the prelims as the senior came back with a 9.04 in the finals to place sixth overall
The Cavs final qualifier came in the men’s shot put as Eric Whalen, another senior, unleashed a 52-7 1/4 (16.09m) to easily top the automatic qualifying barrier (15.60m).
Idaho Open Recap
NAMPA, Idaho—Prior to the season, only 12 men have run the 200-meter dash in indoor competition during Concordia’s first six years with a varsity track & field team. The school’s performance list nearly doubled overnight as nine Cavaliers competed in the event at the Idaho Open on Saturday.
Three of those competitors crossed below the school record of 23.21 with Justin Oliveri posting the top time of 23.02. Oliveri was followed by Matt Challender with a 23.14 and Edgar Vazquez with a 23.16. Not far behind, Andre Washington (23.23), Jordan Reeher (23.33) and Matt Waters (23.83) nearly joined the record party.
Vazquez almost pulled in another CU record with a 50.17 in the 400, just .11 off the indoor school record of 50.06 which was set in 2009. Washington and Ratliff also cracked into the 50-second range with Washington finishing shy of his season best with a 50.71 and Ratliff recording a 50.95.
Moving up to the 800, Cordero Cisneros claimed a provisional mark with little room to spare after coming in at 1:56.43. Later on, Cisneros could have used that little space as the senior missed the feat in the mile by the slimmest of margins with a 4:22.04, just .04 off the NAIA ‘B’ standard. In his first mile of the season, Adrian Taylor wasn’t too far back with a 4:29.24 to give the Cavs a pair of quick finishes in the event.
Also reaching the NAIA ‘B’ standard, Ismael Osorio uncorked a career-best with a 50-8 1/4 (15.45m) distance in the shot put while teammate Eric Whalen bettered his season-opener from Friday. Already ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, Whalen toppled his former mark by adding a full foot to his previous performance.
In women’s action, Eunice Makinde matched her season-best in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.02 effort for the second straight day. Marshey Brown added solid results in the 200 and the 400 with times of 26.61 and 1:01.15.
