ATLANTA, Ga. – Seniors Rachel Scarpelli of Concordia University and Katie Steigleman of Corban University were both named honorable mention on the 2012 Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) National Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NAIA) Coaches' All-America Team, as announced Thursday by the WBCA office.
“Congratulations to all the members of the 2012 Coaches' NAIA All-America Team,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “These 10 student-athletes truly elevated their game above the rest this season and are deserving of such recognition.”
This year's team is comprised of 29 student-athletes from Division I and II programs that includes 10 first-team members and 19 honorable mention recipients.
Scarpelli and Steigleman were also part of a five-player West Coast contingent that also included first-team member Tugce Canitez of Westmont, first-team member Jasmine Stohr of Lewis-Clark State, and Alexsis Brown of California Maritime Academy from the honorable mention list.
This year's 10-player All-America Team included Canitez, Regena Jackson of Belhaven, Jennifer Jorgensen of Grand View, Natalia Shumpert of Freed-Hardeman, Lavanda Ross of Union, Kendra Da Jong of Northwestern, Keiva Council of Loyola, Krystal Stoneking of Indiana Wesleyan, Lauren Wombles of Cumberlands, and Stohr.
Scarpelli was named All-CCC honorable mention after leading Concordia in eight statistical categories during her final season of collegiate competition, including field goals attempted (269), three-point field goals made (54), three-point field goals attempted (162), three-point field goal percentage (0.333), free throws made (74), free throws attempted (97), total points (320), and points per game (13.3).
The senior guard also finished her career as the Concordia's all-time leader in three-point field goals made (193) and three-point field goals attempted (535).
For the fourth straight season, Steigleman was named first-team All-Cascade Collegiate Conference after helping lead the Corban to its second of back-to-back league regular season titles. Steigleman also lead Corban in two statistical categories during her final season as a Warrior, including points per game (15.0) and free throw percentage (0.871) despite missing six games due to a knee injury.
Steigleman closed out her record-breaking career at Corban as the program's all-time leader in six offensive categories that includes total points (1,969), points per game (16.8), field goals made (712), three-point field goals made (170), three-point field goals attempted (473), and free throws made (370).
