Two Raiders Win Event Titles at Hornet Invitational
MEET RESULTS
SACRAMENTO – Three national automatic qualifying marks and 34 Cascade Collegiate Conference qualifiers highlighted the Southern Oregon track and field program’s performance at the 2012 Hornet Invitational Saturday at Sacrament State’s Hornet Stadium.
Two Raiders earned individual event titles at the meet. Eric Avila won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:33.14, which beat the NAIA ‘A’ standard mark to qualify the freshman for the 2012 National Championships. James Johnstone finished the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:11.04 to win the event and earn an automatic spot at the NAIA Championships.
Jessie Rozario gave the Raiders their third automatic qualifier to nationals. Running the 3000-meter steeplechase for the first time, Rozario posted a time of 11:24.77 to finish second in the event and earn an NAIA berth.
Along with the two event championships and three NAIA automatic marks, the Raiders finished with 34 conference qualifying marks. Amelia Maguin led the way with three CCC marks, running the 100 hurdles in 16.53 and the 400 hurdles in 1:06.3 and posting a long jump distance of 14-9 1/4. Michael Ruppert also qualified in three events, posting conference marks in the hammer throw (117-2), the shot put (45-3 3/4) and the discus (120-5).
Sullivan Stevens qualified for the conference championships in both hurdle events, placing second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.61 and finishing fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.45. Erik Evasovic also posted CCC marks in both hurdle events, with times of 15.95 in the 110 and 58.4 in the 400.
Mikayla Garrard hit CCC marks in the 200-meter dash (26.42) and the 400-meter dash (59.02), while Tyler Tompkins qualified in the hammer throw (159-10) and the shot put (40-11 1/2).
“It was a good start to our outdoor season,” SOU head coach Grier Gatlin said. “The kids did really well against very good early-season competition. Our marks were indicative of the work we’ve done so far, and they also tell us that we have work ahead of us to do.”
The Raiders return to action next weekend, when they will travel to Chico, Calif., for the 2012 Wildcat Invitational on March 24.
