CAMAS, Wash.—With its top four golfers all in the top seven, the Concordia women’s golf team claimed the team title at the Cavalier Classic on Tuesday, while opening up a wide gap in the CCC standings.
Concordia topped the field with a 964 total (318-326-320), 11 strokes ahead of the University of Victoria at 975 (332-327-316), a team three spots ahead of them in the national poll at No. 10.
The victory also gives the Cavs a commanding lead in the CCC standings, as The College of Idaho finished 60 strokes behind Concordia in third at 1024 (344-340-340). Concordia entered the tournament just 17 strokes up on The College of Idaho in the conference race, but will leave 77 strokes up with only two tournaments left in the season.
Behind the top three, Simon Fraser finished fourth at 1092 (372-359-361), Warner Pacific finished fifth at 1101 (366-360-375) and Corban finished sixth at 1190 (406-389-395). Northwest Christian also competed at the tournament, but only brought three golfers, which kept them out of the team race.
Individually, Megan Woodland of the University of Victoria claimed the individual title after a 2-under par 70 in the final round gave her the low round of the tournament and a winning-total of 229 (78-81-70). Behind her, Northwest Christian’s Sarah Crofcheck (76-77-79) and Concordia’s Sara Molyneux (75-79-78) tied for second at 232.
Trish Gibbens came in next in fourth (80-79-79—238) to lead the College of Idaho, while Holly Speer (80-80-81—241), Madison Alamillo (81-83-82—246) and Sunny Powers (82-86-79—247) placed fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively to stack the leaderboard in the Cavs’ favor. No team other than Concordia placed more than three players in the top 10.
Elsewhere in the CCC, Haley Partridge gave Northwest Christian two golfers in the top 10, finishing tenth at 250 (80-82-88). Besides her, Scotti Jo Helmick finished 19th (89-93-85—267) to lead Warner Pacific, while Morgan McComish finished 26th (96-87-99—282) to lead Corban.
The College of Idaho will host the next CCC tournament, with The College of Idaho Invitational scheduled for April 9-10. The College of Idaho Invitational represents the fourth CCC tournament of the season and the final before the end-of-year CCC Championships.
