Concordia Track Opens Outdoor Season with a Dozen NAIA Automatic Qualifiers
COMPLETE RESULTS
PORTLAND, Ore.—After program-best finishes in both the men’s and women’s indoor national championships, Concordia University got off to a fast start on duplicating the effort at the outdoor champs as the teams combined to net 12 automatic qualifiers at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open on Saturday.
Overall, the Cavaliers scored 13 events wins including 1-2-3 sweeps in both the men’s and women’s shot put, discus and hammer throws.
The men’s shot put accounted for four of the school’s 12 ‘A’ qualifiers with Eric Whalen leading the way with a 55-3 3/4 effort. Whalen’s mark fell just shy of his own outdoor school record of 55-8 1/2. Nate Moses, Ismael Osorio and Anthony Lantz all cracked the 51-foot barrier as well with Moses registering a 53-0, Osorio a 52-0 1/2 and Lantz a 51-7 3/4 toss.
Moses came back later in the day to post a 187-9 in the discus, just off the school record of 190-7 set by Nik Kay while winning the 2008 NAIA title in the event. The previous day at the CU Throw Center, Whalen won the javelin with a 174-5 while Bo Johnson uncorked a personal-best 191-8 in the hammer throw.
Matt Webster joined Johnson with an automatic qualifier in a second-place finish with an 180-8 while Adam Riddle hit the provisional standard with a 171-3. Webster’s mark was a career best by more than 20 feet while Riddle added 16 feet from his personal best that was set as a true freshman last season.
Gabriella Dixson earned event wins in the shot put (44-5 1/4) and the discus (148-4) to earn a trip to nationals in both events. Sharayah Kenady popped more than an eight-foot personal best in the hammer with a 184-5. Not only did Kenady’s mark set a lifetime best, but it easily unseated Dixson’s school record of 176-2. Dixson placed second to Kenady with a toss of 170-0 for her third auto qualifier of the meet.
Nearly matching Kenady with a personal-record of her own, Aria Nojima opened her 2012 season with a meet-winning 154-0 in the javelin, just off her 157-8 lifetime best.
On the track, NyEma Sims notched wins in the 100 (12.64) and 200 (25.73) while Eunice Makinde tackled the 100-meter hurdle field with a 15.02 to reach provisional status. In between her two dashes, Sims placed second overall at the shot put ring with a 37-10 1/2 heave, helping the Cavs complete the 1-2-3 sweep.
The CU men grabbed gold in both hurdling events as Maxwell Waters toppled the field in the 110-meter version with a 15.76 and Jordan Reeher replicated the feat in the 400-meter hurdles with a 53.95. Reeher’s time gave the true freshman an ‘A’ qualifier. Runner-up to Reeher, James Ratliff crossed in 54.62 to earn the ‘B’ standard.
In the flat sprints, the Concordia men not only had four finishers in the top 10 in the 100 at the meet, but the performances placed the entire quartet in the top 10 on the school’s all-time performance list. Eric Tolento led the contingent with a fourth-place result ay 11.12, edging teammate Justin Oliveri by .02. DeAndre Jackson placed sixth at 11.24 and Chad Fowler 10th at 11.35. The four times hold up as No. 3, No. 4, No. 7 and No. 10 in the school’s all-time record books.
In a rare scored meet during the regular season, both squads pulled in team championships despite not competing in any distance or jumping events. The CU women scored 128 points to get by the host Pioneers of Lewis & Clark College y 15 points. The Cavalier men tallied 164 1/2 points to outpace runner-up Warner Pacific (93).
