SOU Claims Three Titles at Wildcat Invitational
MEET RESULTS
CHICO, Calif. – The Southern Oregon track and field program overcame difficult weather conditions to earn three individual event titles, three NAIA qualifying marks and 34 Cascade Collegiate Conference qualifying marks at Saturday’s Chico State Wildcat Invitational.
Eric Avila earned the Raiders’ lone NAIA automatic qualifying mark, finishing second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:52.42 to pass the NAIA “A” standard in the event. Matt Battaglia and James Johnstone each earned provisional “B” standard qualifiers, as Battaglia won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.48. Johnstone finished sixth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:56.62.
David Sherman also won an event title for the Raiders, finishing the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:43.71 to win the event. Southern Oregon’s final event title came in the men’s 4x400 meter relay, as Sullivan Stevens, Jonz Olander, Nick Perrino and Brandon Ritchie teamed up to post a first-place time of 3:18.49.
Mikayla Garrard posted CCC qualifying marks in three events, finishing fourth in the 100 meter dash (13.14), sixth in the 200 meter dash (26.66) and seventh in the long jump (4.94 meters). Amelia Maguin qualified in two events, finishing seventh in the 100 meter dash (13.3) and sixth in the long jump (4.95 meters). Nicole Leaf also qualified in a pair of events, finishing 11th in the 100 meter hurdles (18.72) and seventh in the triple jump (9.62 meters). Hannah Mason posted qualifying marks in the discus (38.2 meters) and the hammer (39.34 meters).
Michael Ruppert and Tyler Thompkins each posted three CCC qualifying marks, earning spots in the shot put, discus and hammer throws. Ruppert finished fifth in the shot put (14.11 meters), 13th in the discus (40.78 meters) and 14th in the hammer (35.77 meters), while Tompkins finished eighth in the shot put (13.21), eighth in the discus (42.98) and fifth in the hammer (47.91). Sullivan Stevens qualified for the conference meet in the 100 meter dash (11.3) and the 200 meter dash (22.5), while Brandon Ritchie also qualified in both events (11.58 in the 100 and 23.06 in the 200).
Southern Oregon will have next week off as part of Spring Break before returning to action at the CCC Multi-Event Championships in Oregon City and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival/Stanford Invitational in the Bay Area in two weeks.
