Pair of Pitching Gems Lead CU, C of I to Saturday Split
BOX SCORES - Game 1 - Game 2
PORTLAND, Ore.—With pitchers from both teams throwing gems, the No. 22 College of Idaho and Concordia baseball teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
The College of Idaho’s Chad Yeggy and Concordia’s Mitch Ludtke each threw one-run complete games on Saturday, with Yeggy’s leading the Yotes to an 11-1 win in the first game, and Ludtke’s giving Concordia a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
The College of Idaho (24-10, 9-5 NAIA West) and Concordia (17-14, 9-9 NAIA West) will resume their series tomorrow, April 1, with a doubleheader set to begin at 11 a.m.
GAME 1—COLLEGE OF IDAHO 11, CONCORDIA 1
Chad Yeggy’s gem headlined the Yotes’ effort in the first game Saturday, though the C of I offense provided plenty run support for Yeggy, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits.
The game had started quietly for both offenses, with both teams scoreless through three innings. However, the Yotes exploded offensively after that, scoring 11 runs over the next four innings.
Third baseman Jeffrey Harris opened the scoring in the game in the fourth, sending a one-out single back up the middle to score Jarel Lewis from second. Harris and Tanner Hodges then scored later in the inning off a two-out single from Tyler Andazola that gave the Yotes an early 3-0 lead. The Yotes could have scored more in the fourth, but Concordia second baseman Ryan Rodriguez recorded the final out in the inning, while flashing good range to cut off a possible infield single from C of I’s Parker Vernon
Unfortunately for the Cavs, the Yotes came right back with four more runs in the top of the fifth to go up 7-0. The Yotes started the inning hot, as their first five batters reached safely. By the time Concordia recorded the first out in the fifth, three runs had scored already for the Yotes. The Yotes weren’t done, either, as Andazola recorded another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center for the Yotes final run in the inning.
Now up comfortably, the Yotes extend their lead with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Concordia opened its scoring in the bottom of the seventh when Jordan Keeker hit a two-out double that scored Carl Beckert from first.
Concordia had chances earlier in the game, but a couple base-running errors ended possible rallies. The first opportunity for the Cavs came in the bottom of the first when Blake Drake reached first with only one out. However, Drake ended the inning on the base paths later, as he attempted to steal second with two outs and Sean Myrom at the plate. Drake initially appeared to successfully steal second, but the freshman slid past the bag and got tagged out.
Concordia then had another chance to score in the bottom of the third with Jared Young at second and two outs. Sheldon Austria even advanced Young to third with a single, but the Yotes caught Austria taking a wide turn off of first and picked him off the base path to end the threat for Concordia.
Overall, C of I outhit Concordia 11-8 in the game.
Individually, Isaac Garsez, Lewis, Hodges and Harris all finished with two hits in the game for the Yotes, while Lewis and Andazola each finished with three runs batted in. In addition, Lewis and Hodges each scored two runs in the game, while Garsez scored three for the Yotes.
On the flip side, Mike Cero finished as the only Cavalier with multiple hits in the game.
On the mound, Yeggy got the win for the Yotes, having given up only one run on eight hits and a walk through nine innings. CU starter Larsen Kohler, meanwhile, received the loss after giving up eight runs on eight hits and six walks.
GAME 2—CONCORDIA 7, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 1
The teams then essentially played the mirror image of the first game in the nightcap, as the Concordia offense woke up to support Mitch Ludtke’s complete-game performance.
Ludtke’s complete-game proved particularly impressive, as the CU starter gave up only four hits to the Yotes’ offense, which came into the series atop the NAIA West in batting average and on-base percentage. Ludtke also struck out 12 C of I batters in the game, while only allowing two walks. To top it off, Ludtke struck out at least one C of I batter in seven of the nine innings Saturday; struck out the side in the top of the third; and struck out every C of I starter at least once, except for centerfielder Tyler Andazola.
The Cavalier offense provided early run support as well, opening the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second. Sean Myrom scored the first run of the game for the Cavs, as the senior came across after a throwing error on Jordan Keeker’s bunt single allowed him to score. The Cavs then tacked on two more runs later in the inning off a sacrifice fly from Ben Talbot and a single from Nathan Douglas. Douglas’ single started a banner day for the second baseman, as he finished the game 4-for-4 with four singles.
The Yotes responded well to the Cavs’ early lead, though, scoring their first run of the game in the top of the fifth off a one-out double from Andazola. The Yotes could easily have scored more in the inning, with Andazola moving to third on a balk, but Ludtke calmly struck out the next two C of I batters to get out of the jam.
The CU offense then came right back with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Myrom delivered the first two runs for the Cavs in the inning, bringing Blake Drake and Mike Cero home on a one-out single down the left-field line. Myrom also advanced to second on the throw, and then scored himself two batters later on a single up the middle from Keeker. Finally, Keeker scored the last run for the Cavs in the inning, as Douglas singled through the left side of the infield with two outs to record his third hit and second RBI in the game.
Concordia led 7-1 after the fifth-inning rally and rode Ludtke’s arm to the victory from there. Ludtke struck out three C of I batters in the final four innings and let only one C of I batter get past first base.
Overall, Concordia outhit the Yotes 12-4 in the game, while the Cavs stranded only one more runner than the Yotes.
Individually, Cero and Keeker each finished with two hits in the game, while Douglas led all batters with four. Myrom and Douglas also each recorded two runs batted in for the Cavs, while Myrom and Keeker each scored two runs.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey Harris went 3-for-4 in the game for the Yotes.
On the mound, Ludtke easily picked up the win for the Cavs, while C of I starter Zachary Fabricius received the loss.
