Concordia Sets Five School Records at John Knight Twilight
MONMOUTH, Ore.—Competing in their fourth meet of the outdoor season, the Concordia track & field teams combined to set five school records on Friday at the John Knight Twilight hosted by Western Oregon University.
Earning school records for CU were: Junia Limage in the 800; Lauren Moran in the steeplechase, Sharyah Kenady in the hammer throw and Eric Whalen in the shot put in addition to the men’s 400-meter relay squad.
Limage won the 800 with a school record 2:08.97 breaking her old mark of 2:09.75 which she used to score a third-place finish at last year’s NAIA national championship. Her time was also two full seconds faster than her 2:11.39 that captured the NAIA indoor national championship in the event just last month.
Also erasing her own school record, Lauren Moran, a two-time NAIA All-American in the steeplechase, posted the top time in the NAIA so far this season with a10:43.23, breaking her former mark of 10:45.06 that was set at the 2010 CCC Championships.
Adding another event-win, Sharayah Kenady won the hammer with a 188-4 (57.40m) effort, nearly adding a full four feet to her previous school record of 184-5 which she established three weeks ago at the Lewis & Clark Invitational. Gabriella Dixson placed second overall with a career best mark of 179-3 (54.65m).
Dixson also improved upon her national leading mark in the discus with a 162-5 (49.50m) toss to add more than a foot to her season best. In the shot put, defending national champion, Kayla Xavier made her 2012 debut with a second-place heave of 46-10 (14.27m), easily earning an automatic qualifier.
In the men’s shot, Eric Whalen reset one of the freshest school records in the books by recording a 56-11 1/4 (17.35m), adding slightly to his NAIA-leading distance of 54-9 1/4 set last week. The senior led a 1-2-3-4 finish by CU throwers with Anthony Lantz (51-2 1/4, 15.60m), Ismael Osorio (50-9 1/2, 15.48m) and Nate Moses (50-5, 15.39m) all cracking the 50-foot plateau.
Moses came back to win the discus with a 183-3 (53.86m), defeating teammate Bo Johnson for the top mark by nearly 30 feet. With Johnson taking runner-up honors with a 154-0 1/4 (46.94m), Whalen gave the Cavs yet another sweep with an NAIA outdoor provisional qualifier of 152-11 (46.62m).
Johnson, however, provided an event win for himself with a 190-6 (58.06m) in the hammer, just off his season best of 191-8. Matthew Webster placed fourth at 184-2 (56.14m) and Adam Riddle added 10 feet to his career best with a 181-11 (55.46m) to turn his provisional qualifier into an automatic entry to nationals.
In the javelin, former NAIA national champion Jesse Staub opened his 2012 campaign with a 208-7 (63.58m) to place third overall and earning the ‘A’ standard in the discipline.
Concordia’s fifth school record occurred in the 400-meter relay as the Cavs covered the track in a meet-winning time of 42.44. Comprised of DeAndre Jackson, Justin Oliveri, Eric Tolento and Jordan Reeher, the team edged the former mark of 42.50 as well as a second CU team made up of Chad Fowler, Edgar Vazquez, Andre Washington and Jameson Futter that placed second with a 42.75.
Using a 10-second personal record, freshman Sarah Whybark punched a ticket to nationals with a 17:44.19 in the 5,000-meter run, clipping the ‘A’ barrier of 17:46.30. In the men’s 5,000, Ben Foubert joined Whybark with an automatic qualifier after knocking 30 seconds off his career best with a 14:40.92, eclipsing the auto barrier with five seconds to spare. Teammate Andrew Landstrom scored a four-second personal record with a 15:05.16.
In addition to their work in the relays, a trio of Cavaliers established season bests in the 100 with Oliveri taking first place with a 10.97, becoming just the second Concordia printer to crack 11 seconds in the event. In addition, Tolento placed third overall with an 11.03, bettering his previous 2012 best of 11.11. Fowler chipped .12 off his season best with an 11.27 for 10th place.
Oliveri returned to place second I the 200 with a 22.44 and was followed by Reeher in sixth at 22.88, Tolento in seventh at 22.95 and Fowler in 11th at 23.38.
In the long jump, Reeher literally inched closer to the school record with a 22-9 1/4 (6.94m) leap, adding 1 1/4 inch to his season best and falling less than an inch off the all-time school mark of 22-10.
