Senior Sean Myrom hit a home run to lead off the second for the Cavs and finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Concordia Pushes Seattle before Falling 4-1
BOX SCORE
BELLEVUE, Wash.—The Concordia baseball team battled NCAA Division I Seattle University throughout their game on Friday, but ultimately lost 4-1.
The Cavs (20-24) opened the scoring with a run in the second and actually outhit the Seattle Redhawks 9-6 in the game. However, Concordia couldn’t get the runs around when they needed them, as the team left eight runners stranded compared to just six for the Redhawks (18-16).
Senior Sean Myrom single-handedly gave the Cavs their run in the game, sending a leadoff home run over the left-field wall in the top of the second. Meanwhile, Jordan Keeker and Mike Dickman attempted to add to the rally in the second, as the two followed Myrom with a double and single back-to-back to put runners on the corners with only out for the Cavs. Unfortunately, an infield pop fly cost Concordia its second of the inning during the next at bat, before a routine grounder to second got the Rehawks out of the inning only one run down.
Mike Cero and Myrom would give the Cavs runners again in the third, but the Redhawks got out of it, and then put up two runs themselves in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Somers delivered the first run of the inning for the Redhawks, as he sent a triple that scored Trent Oleszczuk. Then, after CU got the next Redhawks batter to pop out, Somers came home on a fielder’s choice, beating the Cavs’ throw home on the play.
After that, the Cavs wouldn’t threaten again until the top of the seventh when Sheldon Austria singled, then stole second to give his team a runner in scoring position with only one out and the top of the order following him. However, two fly balls to the outfield left Austria at second and ended the threat from Concordia.
The Cavs didn’t manage a base runner after that, while Seattle added two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Still, despite the loss, CU starter Mitch Ludtke pitched well against the Division I competition, going six full innings, while giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits and three walks. Ludkte also struck out six batters, including two back-to-back to close out the Redhawks’ half of the first.
Meanwhile, offensively, Cero, Myrom, Keeker and Dickman all finished with two hits in the game for the Cavs, while Myrom also had a run scored and an RBI off of his home run. Myrom’s home run was his fourth of the season and his first since he hit one in the second game of a doubleheader against Menlo on March 10.
Concordia and Seattle will play another game tomorrow, April 21 at 1 p.m. That game will conclude the series for both teams, with Concordia traveling back to Portland for its next game—a single game Tuesday, April 24 against Pacific. The Cavs’ game against Pacific will be the team’s last home game of the season and will begin at 5 p.m.
