Eastern Oregon’s Kimmy Moore leads the women's heptathlon with three events to go.
Haynie, Moore Lead CCC Multi-Event Championships after First Day
OREGON CITY, Ore.—A total of 19 athletes got an early start on the 2012 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships as the league hosted the first day of competition for the multi-event portions of the meet at Oregon City High School today.
Through four events of the seven-discipline heptathlon, Eastern Oregon’s Kimmy Moore holds a commanding lead with 2,622 total points. Just under 300 points behind, College of Idaho’s Jasmine Sibert holds down the second spot with 2,366 points while the Concordia duo of Jennifer Roberts and NyEma Sims finished the day in third and fourth place with Roberts edging her teammate by seven points with a 2,127-point tally.
The second day of action at Oregon City H.S. kicks off with the men’s 110-meter hurdles at 9 a.m. while the women open their day with the long jump at 9:15 a.m.
On the men’s side, Robbie Haynie, the recent NAIA National Champion in the indoor heptathlon holds a 202 point advantage over C of I’s Austin Basterrechea. Michael Hurd gave the Coyotes the second and third spot heading into the second day of action with a 3,247-point total, 82 points ahead of Southern Oregon’s Brandon Ritchie.
Three different men captured event wins over the first three events. Haynie nipped Hurd in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.41, but Hurd came back to take the long jump with a mark of 21-9 to claim the overall lead.
Using a meet-best 43-0 1/4 in the shot put, Northwest’s Jason Waltman moved up two places to sixth place in the overall standings. Waltman’s throw was nearly five feet better than the next competitor, but Haynie came back with the second-best heave to slide back into the overall lead through three events.
With the lead back in hand, Haynie went on to extend the gap with a whopping 896 point total in the high jump after clearing 6-11 1/2, a mark good for the No. 1 overall ranking in the NAIA this season. Haynie, a third-place finisher in the high jump at indoor nationals with a successful leap at 6-9 3/4, went on to finish the day with a 50.97 in the 400 for another 770 points.
Hurd won the single-lapper with a 50.18 for 806 points and was followed by Basterrechea, an indoor All-American with a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon, at 50.77 for 779 points.
In the women’s competition, Moore never placed lower than third in any individual event to stake a 257-point lead with three disciplines remaining. Moore opened the day with a runner-up result to Sibert in the 100-meter hurdles –15-52 to 15.78.
In the next event, Moore tied Concordia’s Sims as the lone participants to clear 4-10 1/2 in the high jump.
After finishing 10th out of 10 in the hurdles, Sims continued to climb the charts with a second-place finish in the shot put with a 40-2 3/4 effort. Corban’s Cristy Mosier also cracked the 40-foot barrier with a meet-best 41-0 1/2 toss for 695 points.
In the final event, Moore easily dispatched the field with a 26.50 in the 200-meer dash, a time good for 754 points. Sibert bookended her day with another solid showing, crossing the line in 27.10 for 710 points to maintain second place in the overall standings.
