OREGON CITY, Ore./BAY AREA, Calif. – The Southern Oregon track and field teams competed at three meets across the Pacific Northwest on Friday, earning eight total NAIA automatic qualifying marks and seven event championships between the Pacific Northwest Relays, the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational.
“It was a very good day, and we continue to improve,” SOU head coach Grier Gatlin said. “We now get into the meat of our season with competitions every weekend, starting with the Chico State Twilight Meet on Friday. We feel that with five weeks to go before the conference championships, we’ve put ourselves in a position that’s going to allow us to get better every week.”
Four Raiders hit automatic NAIA qualifying marks at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, while one SOU athlete posted a provisional qualifying mark. Ryan Sorenson posted the second-best time in the NAIA this season in the 10,000-meter run, an NAIA “A” Qualifying time of 30:47.8.
Seena Frantz and Alexandra Rudd each surpassed the NAIA “A” Standard in the women’s 10,000-meter run, Frantz finishing in a time of 37:05.01 and Rudd finishing in a time of 37:20.6. Dennis McCaffrey’s time of 9:19.93 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was an automatic NAIA qualifier and the fourth-best mark in the NAIA this season. David Sherman earned a “B” qualifying mark with a time of 9:26.44.
The Raiders picked up three more automatic qualifying marks at the Stanford Invitational. Eric Avila improved on his own NAIA “A” standard in the men’s 1500-meter, placing second with a time of 3:48.46 at the Stanford Invitational. James Johnstone improved on his NAIA-best time in the 3000-meter steeplechase, breaking the nine-minute mark with a time of 8:59.84. Scott McIntyre also beat the NAIA “A” standard in the steeplechase with a time of 9:10.45.
Southern Oregon picked up seven event championships and three NAIA marks at the Pacific Northwest Relays in Oregon City. Max Perry earned an automatic bid to the NAIA championships with a throw of 52-2 in the shot put, which also earned him the event title. The Raiders’ men’s 4x800 relay team posted a “B” standard mark with a second-place time of 7:48.88. Sullivan Stevens finished second in the 110-meter hurdles, improving on his previous “B” standard mark in the event with a time of 14.59.
Amelia Maguin won the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.2, and the SOU women’s 800 sprint medley team won the event with a time of 1:50.02. Hannah Mason’s discus throw of 128-3 earned first place, and Tyler Tompkins won the discus with a throw of 140-4. Southern Oregon won the men’s 800 sprint medley with a time of 1:32.51, as well as winning the men’s distance medley with a time of 10:30.27.
Southern Oregon will return to action next week, when the Raiders will travel to Chico, Calif., for the Chico State Twilight and Distance Meet on Friday and Saturday.
