Three Seniors Added to Corban's 2013 Roster
SALEM, Ore. – Corban University's baseball program added three more high school players to its recruiting class Monday, as seniors Landon Frost (Bend, Ore.), Adam Shumka (White Rock, B.C.), and Robert Quezada (Covina, Calif.) officially signed Cascade Collegiate Conference Letters of Intent and became part of the Warrior family.
Frost is the only Oregon-based recruit of the trio, as he comes from Summit High School in Central Oregon. Shumka is the first Canadian to sign with Corban under third-year head coach Jeff McKay's watch, as he comes to Corban after graduating from Pacific Academy in White Rock, British Columbia. Quezada will be traveling the farthest, as he will be coming from the Golden State of California after graduating from Southlands Schools in Walnut, California.
"All three of these athletes have the ability to help us out as freshmen," said Kiel Boynton, Corban's Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. "They have all experienced a high level of success during their high school careers. An aspect that impresses me the most in all three is that they bring a competitiveness with them that will help push our team to become the best it can be each and every day. They are also smart athletes that understand the game and know what is needed to make themselves and the team better each and every day. I am excited to have each of them be a part of the Warrior baseball team, and look forward to seeing them succeed."
Frost, a 5-foot-10 outfielder, was a four-year starter and outfield captain for the Thundercats during his prep career. A member of the two-time Baseball Northwest NW Champions, Frost was rated No. 6 by ESPN in the Top 10 players in Oregon (Class of 2012) and was also ranked No. 4 among the Top 25 players in the state of Oregon in 2010 by Baseball Northwest. Frost earned tournament MVP honors at the Coach Bob Arizona Tournament, while also being ranked among the Top 25 players in the state of Oregon by Baseball Northwest as a senior.
"Landon is an outfielder that will give us depth and above average defense at all three outfield positions," said Boynton. "He has above average speed that will be a valuable weapon to cover the large outfield area of Warrior Field. He also brings a valuable left-handed bat into our lineup that can be used at the top or middle of our batting order. He brings a competitive and winning attitude to our Warrior program after being on many successful baseball teams at Summit High School. I am excited to have him be a part of our baseball team and look forward to seeing him succeed as a player and a person here at Corban."
Shumka, a 6-foot pitcher, played with the White Rock Tritons helping the team to the Team BC Select Pacific Northwest Championship in 2009 and 2011. The right-hander was also selected to the 2011 Team BC Twins Scout Team for the Arizona Fall Classic and Perfect Game Wood Bat Championships. Shumka was chosen as an alternate for the 2011 Canada Cup, while ranking second in the league in strikeouts.
"Adam has had large amounts of success while playing during his high school years," commented Boynton. "He is a strike thrower, who has the ability to strikeout hitters on a regular basis and command his off-speed pitches. He plays in a very competitive league and has carried a sub 3.00 ERA, which shows that he has the ability to get hitters out. I am looking forward to seeing Adam grow as a pitcher physically and mentally. I think Adam has just barely begun to scratch the surface of his pitching potential."
Quezada, a 5-foot-10 middle infielder, was named first team all-league, all-region, and all-state as a senior for the Eagles. In his final prep season, Quezada was named team MVP and holds numerous Southlands Christian School records.
"Robert brings to our team a solid defensive middle infielder," said Boynton. "He is a smart athlete who can step in and help us on the field from day one. He has an above average glove with an excellent arm that will give us quality depth at the shortstop or 2nd base position. He is a right handed hitter that can hit at the top of a lineup and can cause problems on the bases with his speed. He carries a 3.90 GPA, which brings a solid academic ballplayer to or team. I look forward to seeing Robert help Corban baseball to a championship season."
The aforementioned trio joins fellow 2013 recruits Daniel Cavazos, Steven Kha, and Justin Knoll, as the first part of Corban's incoming class for next season.
Corban is coming off the second-best season in program history, as the Warriors registered a win-loss record of 28-23 that included 16 victories in NAIA West play. For the first time since 2003, Corban also advanced to the post-season as the No. 4-seed in the Verizon Wireless NAIA West Tournament.
