MARION, Ind. – Eastern Oregon University student-athlete, Robbie Haynie, leads the decathlon after the first day at the 2012 NAIA Track and Field National Championships.
The senior finished Day 1 with a total of 3,924 points. He opened the day placing second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.61. Haynie then won the long jump with a personal best mark of 23 feet, 6.75 inches. His mark is second on the EOU all-time list. A ninth place finish in the shot put would follow. Haynie’s top toss was 40 feet, 4.75 inches.
Haynie then won the high jump with a top leap at 6 feet, 11 inches. He grabbed 906 points with the event win. The Nampa, Idaho, native finished the day placing second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.19, a new personal best.
Haynie broke the school record point total in the decathlon earlier this season at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Multi-Event Championships with 7,112 points. He had 3,660 points after the first day in that meet.
Brooke Randall ended her junior season with a third-place All-American finish in the women’s javelin. The Wenatchee, Wash., native’s best mark Thursday was 145 feet, 10 inches, winning her flight. She owns the school-record in the event with a personal best mark of 149 feet, 2 inches. Jamie Murchison, competing as a freshman in the championships, came in 12th place with a mark of 129 feet.
Kimmy Moore is in fifth place after Day 1 of the heptathlon with 2,630 points. The senior began the day with a seventh place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.37. She would follow that finish with an eighth place finish in the high jump with a top leap of 4 feet, 11.75 inches. In the third event, the shot put, Moore placed 12th at 31 feet, 11.5 inches. The Noxen, Mont., native ended the day with a sixth place finish in the 200 meters at 25.92.
Kody Coxen crossed the line at 9:28.11 in the steeplechase. He placed fifth in the trials and advances to the finals along with Isaac Updike who finished in 14th at 9:38.50.
Trevor Barrett came in 23rd in the men’s hammer throw with a top toss of 158 feet. The senior later finished 13th in the javelin throw with a mark of 185 feet, 5 inches.
Day one finished for the Mountaineers with Brian Bragg crossing the line in 12th place in the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:59.78.
Eastern begins Friday’s schedule with Haynie in the decathlon at 9:30 a.m. EST. The Mountaineers will have 10 student-athletes competing Friday. Live results will be available on EOUSports.com, along with updates and photos during the meet on Eastern Oregon’s Facebook.
