KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Oregon Institute of Technology will host the 2012 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track and Field Championships, May 10-12, at John F. Moehl Stadium. Events begin Thursday start at 5 p.m. PT, Friday at 3 p.m. and events on Saturday start at 11 a.m. PT.

The meet, held at John F. Moehl Stadium on the campus of Oregon Institute of Technology, will have all 10 members of the conference competing for individual and team qualification to the 2012 NAIA Track & Field National Championship on May 24-26 in Marion, Ind.

The meet opens on Thursday, May 10, at 5 p.m., with the women’s hammer and men’s long jump. Friday begins at 3 p.m., with the women’s pole vault, men’s triple jump and men’s discus. Saturday starts at 11 a.m., with the women’s javelin, men’s shot put and men’s pole vault. The meet concludes at 3:10 p.m., with the men’s 4x400-meter relay.

Concordia earned their sixth consecutive men’s team championship in 2011, holding off Southern Oregon University by a slim margin. CU finished with 192.5 points, while the Raiders ended with 192. Warner Pacific finished a program best third place at 106.5 points, while the Eastern Oregon men placed fourth with 105.5 points.

The Concordia women claimed their fifth consecutive championship trophy behind 11 individual champions in 2011, eventually moving on to earn the 2011 NAIA National Championship last year. Concordia’s dominating 254.5 point total was followed by Eastern Oregon’s 141.5 total. College of Idaho came in third with 102 points.

A total of 14 meet records fell in 2011 in Gresham, Ore., and 13 individual champions return to 2012 meet. Concordia’s Catherine Sims and Gabriella Dixson were named the female track and field athletes of the meet last year, while EOU’s Damion Flores and Robbie Haynie grabbed the men’s honors. Dixson and Haynie each return to this year’s meet.

To date, CCC student-athletes have achieved 100 automatic qualifying marks to the NAIA Championships, which will be held in two weeks at Indiana Wesleyan University.

CCC student-athletes have posted 28 top-five NAIA marks this season – 13 on the women’s side, 15 on the men’s side. Concordia has nine of the top five marks on the women’s side, including the top mark in four women’s events – Junia Limage in the 800, Lauren Moran in the steeplechase, Dixson in the discus, and Sharayah Kenady in the hammer throw.

For the men, Concordia has six top five marks, while Southern Oregon and Eastern both have four. SOU’s Matt Battaglia leads the country in the men’s 800, Haynie has the nation’s top mark in the pole vault and high jump, and Concordia’s Eric Whalen is number one in the shot put.

The women’s and men’s steeplechase races should be intriguing to watch, as three of the top five men’s times in the country are in the CCC, while three of the top six are on the women’s side.
