EUGENE, Ore.—Missing the cut to finals by less than two feet, Concordia’s Nate Moses placed 14th overall in the men’s discus at the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials held at the University Oregon’s Hayward Field on Monday.
Battling rain throughout the afternoon, Moses, the NAIA national champion and the No. 13-ranked individual in the event, recorded his best distance with a 190-9 (58.14m) on his first attempt of the day.
Moses went on to throw a 184-4 (56.19m) and a 187-1 (57.02m) in his next two attempts and finished in seventh place out of 12 competitors in the first flight. Seven of the 12 throwers in the second round jumped Moses in the standings as the junior went on to take 14th out of 24 qualified performers, missing advancing to finals by two places.
Lance Brooks, competing for Nike, went on to win the qualifying round with a 221-7 (64.80m) toss in his opening effort of the day. Russ Winger of Asics will head to finals with the second best distance at 205-5 (62.61m) while Jared Rome of Nike placed third at 202-10 (61.84m).
Only two collegiate athletes made the cut to the final 12 with Abilene Christian’s Nick Jones and Oklahoma University’s Luke Bryant taking 11th and 12th place, respectively. Jones uncorked a 194-1 (59.17m) on his final throw and Bryant a 192-7 (58.71m) on his second attempt.
Moses, meanwhile, entered the meet with a career-best 197-5 (60.17m) which would have tied unattached competitor Wesley Stockberger for eighth place in the qualifying round.
The finals of the men’s discus will take place at 6:05 p.m. on June 28 at Hayward Field.
