WOU’s Isaac Frederick Named Concordia Track & Field/Cross Country Coach
PORTLAND, Ore.—Concordia University Athletic Director Matt English announced today the hiring of Isaac Frederick as the head men’s and women’s cross country/track & field coach.
Frederick comes to Concordia after seven years on staff at Western Oregon University.
“We are excited to welcome Isaac to the Concordia family,” English said. “His versatility, focus on the student-athletes and Northwest ties will help continue our tradition of success. We are confident Isaac will set a high standard and direct the cross country and track and field programs in a first-class way."
A WOU graduate, Frederick returned to his alma mater in 2006 as a full-time assistant under legendary coach Mike Johnson. In 2008, Frederick was promoted to associate head coach where he was a two-time NCAA DII USTFCCCA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
“I’m truly honored to have the opportunity to serve as head coach at Concordia University,” Frederick said. “I have watched Concordia and its athletic department grow throughout the years and it is exciting to now become a part of that continuing evolution. I look forward to getting on campus and working with the student-athletes.”
At WOU, a NCAA Division II institution, Frederick has coached eight Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship teams, including five straight indoor men’s titles (2008-12). Under Frederick’s tutelage, nine WOU student-athletes have set school records while 71 have gone on to earn all-conference accolades.
Frederick also helped steer the WOU men’s and women’s cross country teams to several NCAA DII championship appearances including a 14th-place finish by the men’s squad in 2011. In 2010, the WOU men placed 20th at while the women’s team took 21st at the national cross country meet.
A Portland native that graduated from David Douglas High School, Frederick earned his B.S. and M.A. in teaching at WOU. He is a Level II certified coach in the sprints, hurdles, relays and jumps by USATF.
Frederick holds several top marks on the WOU all-time performance list, including the school record in the indoor 400-meter dash with a 48.59. Frederick earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outstanding Performer of the Outdoor Championship Meet in 2003 and 2004 as he helped lead the Western Oregon men's team to back-to-back titles.
