Meeting WJU for the second time in as many weeks, the Lady Yotes (3-3) made quick work of the Warriors, winning 25-14, 25-17, 25-18. Jessica Peacock led the way with 12 kills, without recording a hitting error.
Peacock and Kylee Nawahine each had two early kills in the first set, as the Yotes methodically pulled away from the Warriors (0-7). Set 2 saw The C of I jump out to a 10-4 lead and cruise to the win. The final frame was tight, as WJU grabbed a 14-12, but a pair of Peacock kills in an 8-1 push to end the match gave the Yotes the win.
Nawahine had seven kills and three blocks in the win, with setter Sierra Porter recording 18 assists, and libero Janel Porter adding 14 digs. Hannah Baldwin and Hailey Bellmer each had seven kills in the loss.
Match 2 was the opposite for the Yotes, as the Cougars (6-2) completed a impressive weekend with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 victory over The C of I.
The Coyotes were victimized by 10 CSUSM service aces, while outside hitter Taylor DeGraaf led the way with 14 kills and 12 digs in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
The California team jumped out to an 11-3 lead in Set 1, before the Yotes cut the deficit to 15-11 on a combo-block by Peacock and Liz Myers. However, CSUSM scored the next five points to claim the set.
Set 2 saw the Yotes use a six-point push on Nawahine’s serve early in the frame to take a 13-8, but Brittany Thompson served up three aces in a 6-0 run by the Cougars to take the lead. The C of I closed within 22-21 on a Torrey Hulsey kill, but two Alyssa Foster spikes ended the set.
The finale had nine ties, with the last coming at 15-15, before a Coyote service error, a bad set, and a Nichole Meyer aces gave CSUSM a three-point lead – a margin they would not relinquish.
Thompson and Andi Vorderman had eight kills in the win, with Foster adding 33 assists. Hulsey led the Yotes with 10 kills and four blocks, with Sierra Porter recording 18 assists and Janel Porter logging 10 digs.
The Lady Yotes return to action next weekend, opening Cascade Conference play at Northwest and Evergreen.
