Trinity Western Defeats #16 Concordia 3-1

PORTLAND, Ore.—The Spartans from Trinity Western University based out of Langley, British Columbia outshot Concordia 21-to-7 en route to a 3-1 win at Tuominen Yard on Monday.
Concordia, ranked No. 16 in the NAIA fell to 1-1-0 on the season. Trinity Western improved to 4-0-1 in preseason play before kicking off their Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) season against Lethbridge (Alberta) on Sept. 7.
Concordia will next take the field on Saturday, Sept. 1 when it plays a neutral-site match against the University of British Columbia in Bellingham, Wash., on the campus of Whatcom Community College
Late in the opening period, the Mustangs’ Jarvis Ambaka connected on a pair of first-half scores to give the visiting side a huge boost before the break.
Jordan Whitehead assisted Ambaka in the 41st minute by firing a 15-yard blast at CU keeper Arne Niermann where Ambaka finished the scoring chance with a one-timer on the rebound.
After being setup by teammates Spencer Schmidt and Carlos Del Aquila, Ambaka headed home his second score at the 43:37 mark of the first half.
Just three minutes into the second half, TWU put the game out of reach as Jason Wiens with a header from seven yards out after a feed from Brayden Volkenant.
The Cavs continued to push their attack in the second half which paid off in the 70th minute as Septi Danciu corralled a pass from Eric Edwards and fired a shot through traffic to erase the clean sheet from the Spartans.
In addition to outshooting the Cavs, Trinity Western earned nine corner kicks compared to four opportunities for the home team. Niermann finished with six saves while his counterpart, Ryan Lowther, tallied one save against the single goal scored against.
