BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Junior Audrey Sullivan scored the fastest overtime goal in program history, as Corban's women's soccer team earned a hard-fought non-conference victory over Trinity Lutheran, 4-3 in overtime, Monday on Warrior Field.
With today's come-from-behind win, Corban remains perfect in 2012 with an overall record of 2-0-0. Meanwhile, Trinity Lutheran falls to 0-3-0 on the season with all three losses coming at the hands of Cascade Collegiate Conference opponents.
Sullivan would score a pair of goals Monday that included the game-winner a mere 20 seconds into the overtime frame, while fellow junior Tera McDonough and senior Allison Knotts added a goal each in the victory. Junior Emily Boudreau would tally a pair of assists, while Sullivan and freshman Katelyn Weaver each collected an assist to go along with senior Emily Tsugawa's assist on the game-winner.
Trinity Lutheran would get on the board first via a goal in the fifth minute, as Brianna Ellis lofted a shot from 20 yards out up and over the out-stretched arm of Corban's keeper off an assist by Jaimie Menchaca. Ellis' goal was the first this season for Trinity Lutheran after the Eagles were shut out in a pair of games over the weekend in Ashland.
The visiting Eagles would hold the lead until the 26th minute, as Corban got the equalizer off a corner kick that was started by Boudreau and finished via a header by Sullivan to tie the score at 1-1.
Less than three minutes later, Boudreau would connect with McDonough on another corner kick for the go-ahead goal at the 28:03 mark. Boudreau would send a perfectly placed corner kick to the back corner of the goal where McDonough was waiting, as the third-year Warrior one-timed home her first goal of the season for the 2-1 Corban lead.
The Warriors would hold the lead until the 71st minute when Trinity Lutheran's Shey Thommasen teamed with Alex Chick on a perfectly played through ball that Thommasen would shot from the right side up and over Corban's keeper for the game-tying goal at the 70:42 mark.
Less than five minutes later, Corban would retake the lead when Knotts drilled home her first goal of the season off a combo assist from Weaver and Sullivan for the 3-2 lead. Sullivan would begin the play by eluding numerous TLC defenders before sending a through ball to Weaver, who quickly sent a pass over to Knotts where she rocketed a shot into the back of the net at the 75:26 mark.
Trinity Lutheran would waste little time in scoring the game-tying goal when Thommasen teamed once again with Chick at the 76:09 mark on a through ball that Thommasen directed into the upper left corner for her second goal of the afternoon tying the game at 3-3.
Neither team would score again in regulation, as Corban had the best opportunity at the 86:41 mark when Sullivan sent a shot up and over Trinity Lutheran's keeper only to have the ball ricochet off the crossbar and over the end line.
Both teams would go into overtime with momentum, but Corban was the team that capitalized immediately. Corban would attempt to score off the kick off, as Sullivan unleashed a shot from midfield to the awaiting Trinity Lutheran keeper. On an attempted clearance by TLC's keeper, McDonough one-timed a pass to Tsugawa, who threaded a pass behind Trinity Lutheran's defense to an oncoming Sullivan. Wasting no time, Sullivan unloaded a shot from 20 yards out into the back of the net for the game-winning goal at the 90:20 mark of the extra period for the 4-3 victory.
Sullivan would end the game with five points (two goals & one assist), while McDonough tallied three points (one goal & one assist). The Warrior duo of Boudreau and Knotts would tally two points apiece, while Tsugawa and Weaver added to their season point totals with an assist each.
The goalkeeping duo of junior Alexis Beattie and sophomore Kaitlyn Mendenhall would split time between the pipes for Corban, as each net-minder registered a single save with Mendenhall picking up her second win of the season.
Thommansen would lead Trinity Lutheran's offense with a pair of goals, while K.C. Wilson tallied a game-high six saves for the Eagles despite suffering the heart-breaking loss.
Corban will return to action on Friday, August 31st, against NCAA Division III member and crosstown rival Willamette beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Sparks Field in Salem.
