Carr's Two Goals Clinch Overtime Win for Raiders
BOX SCORE
FRESNO, Calif. – Stephanie Carr scored the game-winner on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 97th minute, her second goal of the match, as Southern Oregon knocked off Fresno Pacific Saturday night in nonconference women’s soccer action.
The win improves Southern Oregon’s season record to 2-0-1 after SOU played its second consecutive overtime match. Fresno Pacific falls to 0-1 after its first match of the season. The Raiders return to action Monday, when they will visit Holy Names for a nonconference match at 11 a.m.
Jay Valtierra put Fresno Pacific up 1-0 in the 32nd minute, taking a pass from Amanda Hudec and Jae Slocum to find the net for the first goal of the match. The score remained tied until midway through the second period.
"We got a really resilient second half, just kind of turned the switch where after the halftime whistle we were far better," SOU head coach Jon Clement said. "We managed to regain territory and momentum and played some pretty scintillating soccer at times.”
Carr and Julie Zamzow teamed up for a two-on-one charge toward the net in the 67th minute, with Zamzow picking up the steal on the right side and passing to Carr for the shot into the left net.
“The last part of the regulation and overtimes was just a great game, and the two goals were really special goals,” Clement said. “Julie’s pass for the first goal was about as exquisite a ball as you’ll see, and the free kick was a rip. I’m really proud of our team and we want to build off of this and continue to get better.”
Southern Oregon out-shot Fresno Pacific 11-8, with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Carr led the way with four shots for the Raiders, while Elise De Jesse and Zamzow each added a pair of shots. Kelsey Clement and Katelyn Allen split time at goalkeeper, with Clement playing 45 minutes and Allen serving 52 minutes in the net.
Carr’s game-winner marked her fourth goal of the season in only three matches. The senior earned Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week last week after scoring a pair of goals in the Raiders’ opening weekend matches.
Clement also mentioned the strong road support Raider fans showed, with an impressive presence at the match.
“There were times during the game where the SOU cheers drowned out the Fresno cheers, so we’d like to thank everybody who travelled to the game to support us.”
