Second-Half Comeback Nets Cavs 2-1 Win over Corban
BOX SCORE -
Concordia vs. Corban
PORTLAND, Ore.—For the second-straight match, the No. 28 Concordia men’ soccer team came back from a halftime deficit, this time turning a 1-0 disadvantage at the half into a 2-1 win over Corban on Tuesday.
With their sudden flair for the dramatic, the Cavaliers (2-2-1, 1-0-0 CCC) got the game-winning goal on Tuesday on a penalty kick from Septi Danciu with just 2:41 left in regulation. Danciu’s goal capped the second-half comeback for the Cavs after Corban held them to just one shot in the first half.
Tuesday’s win, meanwhile, followed the Cavs’ furious comeback from a 2-0 halftime deficit to No. 6 Concordia-Irvine on Saturday. Like on Tuesday, the Cavs scored two second-half goals in that match and tied Concordia-Irvine 2-2. Appropriately, Danciu scored the game-tying goal in that match as well, which, coincidentally, also came in the 88th minute.
Before Danciu put his stamp on Tuesday’s match though, Concordia leveled the match with a goal from newcomer Gerrit Hamann in the 68th minute. Patrick Allred indirectly fed Hamann the ball, as Allred’s throw in got punched out to Hamann, who stood waiting at the top-center of the box. Once with the ball, Hamann rocketed a shot through the crowd in the box that found the net in the upper-left part of the goal.
Hamann’s goal evened the match at 1-1, but before Danciu’s heroics in the 88th minute, the Warriors would nearly take the lead back with a flurry of shots in the 86th.
The Warriors’ got the ball into the Cavalier box to start the threat where several players from both teams batted it around. The Cavaliers’ defenders eventually punched the ball up the center of the field to prevent the initial threat, but that’s where the Warriors’ James Williamson was waiting.
Williamson fielded the Cavs’ initial clearance and launched a hard shot on the Cavalier goal. Cavalier goalkeeper Cole Dahle, meanwhile, had been drawn to the right on the Warriors’ initial play, putting him in out of position for Williamson’s shot, which was heading hard to his left. However, with his momentum carrying him away from the ball, Dahle kicked his foot up behind him and, amazingly, redirected what had appeared to be a sure goal for the Warriors.
The Warrior threat was not over though, as the Warriors’ Juan Castillo fielded Dahle’s foot save and launched his own shot on the Concordia goal. However, by that time, Dahle had found his balance again and the senior made his second save in as many seconds.
Dahle’s saves kept the match tied at 1-1 and gave Danciu the opportunity for the game-winner only two minutes later.
With the win, Concordia improved to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in CCC play. The match also opened the conference season for Corban, who dropped to 1-2-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the CCC.
Dahle, meanwhile, improved to 1-0-1 in goal for the Cavs this season after he entered at halftime for the second-straight match. On the flip side, Corban’s Steve Mason played all 90 minutes for the Warriors in goal.
Statistically, both defenses limited chances for the opposing offense, as the teams tied in overall shots, 7-to-7. Concordia had a marked difference between halves though, as six of their seven shots came after halftime.
Next up, the Cavaliers return to action Saturday, Sept. 15 when they host Northwest Christian at 6 p.m. at Tuominen Yard. The Warriors also return to action on Saturday when they host Warner Pacific for a match at 3 p.m.
