Northwest Registers Second Straight Shutout
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University scored two second half goals to earn their second straight shutout and second consecutive Cascade Conference win as they defeated the College of Idaho, 2-0, this afternoon.
Neither team could manage a score in the first half as Northwest’s defense limited C of I to 3 shots while they had 10 of their own. NU’s James Kerr came close to giving the Eagles the lead with his shot at the 16:54 mark but his 5 yard blast from the left side was saved by C of I’s goalkeeper, Colin Benham-Martin. The College of Idaho missed an opportunity in the 29th minute when Nicko Marino’s shot barely missed the mark as he put his foot on the ball from 9 yards away on the right side and his shot missed the left corner.
Ryan Gamache broke the tie in the 65th minute put his right footer into the goal from 10 yards out on the left side off a pass and assist from teammate James Kerr. It was Kerr’s fourth assist of the year. Alex Taylor clinched the win for NU at the 80:36 mark as he took Gamache’s cross from the left side and drilled one in from 8 yards out on the right side.
College of Idaho missed opportunities to score in the second half as Nicko Marino and Luis Gomez’s shots were saved by NU goalie, Joe Galbraith in the 75th minute and Marino, Gomez and Ben Tjaden were turned away again in the 78th minute,
Joe Galbraith earns the shutout for Northwest U. (4-1-1, 2-0 CCC) finishing with 5 saves. Colin Benham-Martin had 4 saves in goal for the College of Idaho (0-4-2, 0-2 CCC). NU held a 10-3 edge in shots in the first half, but C of I picked up the pace in the second out shooting Northwest 15-7.
“I felt we came out with some good energy again having played the day before,” said coach Gary McIntosh of the Eagles. “The guys moved the ball and communicated well. We had some great passing and touches on ball today. I’m pleased with them going out and working the game plan and getting win. It was a good weekend for us and I’m proud of the guys”
Northwest U. remains at home and will host Northwest Christian on Weds., Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. The College of Idaho will return home and take on Concordia Univ. on the 19th in Caldwell at 3:30 p.m.
