SEATTLE, Wash. – Northwest University’s women cross country team finished 11th in a field of 19 teams in this morning’s open division of the annual University of Washington Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in West Seattle.

With sunny skies and weather in the 60’s, Joanna Sowers had the best finish of the Eagles coming in 38th in the field of 213 runners as she finished the 6k event in 23:29. Teammate Meagan Governor was right behind her in 40th coming in at 27:30. Vanessa Ahrendt was 55th with her time of 23:46. Other Eagles taking part in the meet were: Emily Sears (24:31), Molly Evans (24:39), Lindsey Wagner (24:42), Marissa Flannery (25:11), and Sigrid Thoreson (25:33).

Matt Porter placed 33rd out of 236 entrants as he finished the men’s 8k in 25:51. Freshman Jonathan Ferguson ran a 28:18.

Former NU cross country runner, Seth Bridges, took 2nd place in the top, invitational division as he ran the 8k in 23:57. Bridges will be competing in track & field for Northwest in the spring.

“I thought we had a good day out there,” stated NU coach, Mark Mandi. “It’s early in the season, still, and we are trying to work on some elements of our racing before we get into the full swing of the race season. Our women continued to improve on their pack running. I think that it has been an encouragement for them to find their teammates early in the race and fight to stay with each other. Our men just needed to get out there and gain experience. Matt Porter had a great race, today, and I am looking forward seeing him finish out his senior year well.

The other CCC team competing, Corban, finished 13th in the women’s open division.
