PORTLAND, Ore. – Knight student-athletes were a visible presence today at the 2012 Common Day of Service, an annual event organized by the Campus Ministries department at Warner Pacific College.

Every year WPC students, faculty, and staff take a full day off from classes to work on various community service projects around the Portland area.

“I was really excited when I heard about this event, and how it has become part of the culture of the WPC community,” said Jamie Joss, Warner Pacific’s new director of athletics. “This aligns perfectly with our status as a Champions of Character institution and the goals of the NAIA. I am encouraged how our athletes stepped up today and made a difference.”

The men’s basketball team made their annual trip to Atkinson Elementary School, where the players worked on landscaping projects and helped teachers with classroom projects.

Lynchwood Elementary School was the site for service from the Knight Cross Country teams, where the athletes spread a new layer of bark chips on a walking trail and playground areas.

Members of the volleyball team made the short trek up Mt. Tabor, where hand rails were painted and non-native plants were removed.

Coach Matt Gregg and the women’s basketball team made their way to Spring Mountain Elementary School in Oregon City, where the ladies helped the teachers prepare classrooms for their parent open house.

More student-athletes performed service at several other locations such as Lynchview Elementary, Café au Play, and Pioneer School.
