Corban's Tsugawa Tricks William Jessup in "Battle of Warriors"
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Senior Emily Tsugawa registered the second hat trick of her career scoring all three goals in a 3-0 victory for Corban's women's soccer team over California Pacific Conference member William Jessup Saturday at Warrior Field.
With today's victory, Corban concludes its non-conference schedule at 5-3-0 overall. Meanwhile, William Jessup closed out its trip to Oregon at 1-1 moving its record of 4-3-2 overall this season.
Tsugawa pushed her season goal total to five with today's hat trick, as the fourth-year Warrior became the first Corban women's soccer player to score three-or-more goals in a game twice in her career since former Warrior KeriAnn Rumrey accomplished the feat on October 18, 2003. Tsugawa recorded her first career hat trick last season against Trinity Lutheran and is only the fifth Warrior since 2002 to score three-or-more goals in a game.
Corban would get on the board early in the game, as junior Audrey Sullivan was pulled down in the penalty box on a breakaway by William Jessup's keeper awarding the host Warriors a golden scoring opportunity. Tsugawa would step up to the penalty circle and sent a perfectly placed shot into the right side of the goal past a stunned William Jessup net-minder for an early 1-0 lead for Corban at the 5:11 mark.
Over the final 39-plus minutes of the opening half, neither team would score again as both teams had chances that included a pair of shots of the goal frame by each team resulting in a 1-0 lead for Corban at halftime.
In the 53rd minute, Corban would strike again when Tsugawa took a pass from junior Emily Boudreau before spinning around a William Jessup defender and sending a low rolling shot off the inside of the right post into the back of the net for her second goal of the afternoon and a two-goal Corban lead (2-0) at the 52:35 mark.
Less than four minutes later, Corban would strike again when Tsugawa teamed with Boudreau and senior Allison Knotts for her third and final goal of the game. Boudreau would begin the scoring play sending a corner kick into the crowd, as Knotts tapped a pass to Tsugawa who drilled a shot past a diving William Jessup keeper for a three-goal Corban lead (3-0) at the 56:06 mark.
William Jessup would have one final scoring chance in the 90th minute when Cara Eskenazi dribbled down the far sideline before sending a shot just past an out-stretched Corban goalie only to ricochet the shot off the left post and out of bounds.
Corban's goalkeeping duo of junior Alexis Beattie and sophomore Kaitlyn Mendenhall would split time between the pipes, as Beattie registered one save with Mendenhall recording a game-high four saves. William Jessup would also split time between a pair of keepers, as Morgan Kinyon tallied a single save despite allowing the eventual game-winning goal and Katie Rappazzo recorded a pair of saves during the second half.
In an evenly played game, Corban recorded just one more shot (12-to-11) than William Jessup that also included a slight advantage in shots on goal (6-to-5). Corban was also awarded two more corner kicks (3-to-1) than the visiting Warriors.
Corban will return to the pitch on Friday, September 28th, when the Warriors open Cascade Collegiate Conference play against the visiting Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Salem.
