Evergreen Shuts Out Northwest
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Evergreen scored in the first 27 seconds of the game and three times in the second half to post a 4-0 shutout victory over the Northwest University Eagles this afternoon in conference play. With the victory, Evergreen improves to 5-1 in CCC play while the NU men even their record at 3-3.
Evergreen got their scoring going early as Jack Fortune dribbled up the middle, splitting two NU defenders and drilled his shot into the right corner from 25 yards out. Many of the late arriving spectators missed the quick score by the Geoducks. It looked like Northwest might tie the score in the 45th minute as Nickey Rick's header looked to be in, but it would not count and Evergreen would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Four minutes into the second half, Northwest fouled on the left side of the penalty area setting up Mirza Memic's first goal off his penalty kick. Kevin Flavin would make it 3-0 for the Geoducks as he dribbled up the left side and put his right footer past the NU goalkeeper and into the right corner of the net from 15 yards out. Memic would then score his second goal of the day as George Bundy placed a nice pass to Memic off a free kick from top right center and Memic headed it in from 7 yards out from the left side for the capper and the 4-0 lead.
NU's Ryan Gamache came close to scoring with 9:48 left on the clock as his rocket from 25 yards out hit the crossbar and over the outstretched hand of Evergreen goalie Mauricio Sanchez. Sanchez earned the shutout with 5 saves for the game. Scott Lane had 3 saves in goal for Northwest U. Evergreen (5-4, 5-1 CCC) outshot NU 14-9 while Northwest (5-4-1, 3-3 CCC) held the edge in corner kicks, 6-3.
"Disappointing day is about all I can say," stated Gary McIntosh, Eagle head coach. "We did not execute the game plan today and when you get scored on 30 seconds into the game you are then playing behind the entire match."
Northwest U. will remain home and will host Corban on Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. while Evergreen will host Northwest Christian on the same day at 2 p.m.
