REDDING, Calif. –
Southern Oregon scored two goals in the first period and added four more in the second as the Raiders shut out Simpson 6-0 in nonconference women’s soccer action Thursday afternoon.

Southern Oregon improved its program-best start to 4-0-1 with the win, while Simpson fell to 0-3 with the loss. The Raiders return to action Sunday afternoon with a neutral-site matchup against No. 18 Concordia (Calif.) in Portland.

“Obviously it’s a pretty good team victory,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “Anytime you can score six goals, it’s always a good thing. We opened the game pretty well; we connected well and deserved the victory.”

Stephanie Carr continued her dominant early-season performance, scoring a pair of goals to raise her season total to seven through five matches. The senior is now two goals away from tying the SOU career mark of 32. Sydney Paulsen also scored two goals and added an assist, while Julie Zamzow and Elise De Jesse each tallied a goal. Kelsey Clement and Katelyn Allen split time in goal to earn the shared shutout for the Raiders.

Carr got the Raiders going early, putting SOU up 1-0 in only the sixth minute with her first goal of the match. It remained 1-0 for most of the first half, but Paulsen took a pass from De Jesse and Megan McArthur and found the net in the final minute of the period to make it 2-0 going into halftime.

De Jesse’s goal came less than five minutes into the second period, as she took a pass from Danielle Stave and knocked it in. A few minutes later Paulsen added her second goal of the match and Carr scored her second in the 61st minute. Zamzow made it 6-0 when she scored off a pass from Krista Bormann in the 87th minute.

“We’re happy with the way that we’re playing,” Clement said. “I still think we can get better, and I know that we’ll put in our best effort to do that on Sunday.”
