Winwood Lifts Cavs in Overtime
BOX SCORE - Concordia (Ore.) vs. Concordia (Calif.)
PORTLAND, Ore.—Senior Kaylynn Winwood scored a golden goal for the Cavaliers in the 93rd minute, as the No. 2-ranked Concordia women’s soccer team beat its third ranked opponent of the season with a 2-1 overtime triumph over No. 18 Concordia-Irvine on Friday.
The Cavaliers (5-0-0) had to weather a second-half scare to secure the win though, as the Concordia-Irvine Eagles (2-2-0) leveled the match with a goal in the 76th minute.
The Cavaliers had controlled the match to that point, but left the Eagles a window by not finding a second goal.
“We had so many chances to score in the match,” said CU head coach Grant Landy. “When you play a good team you have to get distance between them. We kept them in the game. It was another great home crowd but I didn’t feel our energy was that great. To be honest, we were a little flat and that is something we will have to address tomorrow.”
The Cavaliers had to work to prevent the Eagles from scoring a second late goal too.
The Eagles appeared to have a good look at a second goal in the 88th minute when the Eagles’ Megan Daniels, who scored the game-tying goal, drew CU goalkeeper Tori Talbutt way out to the top-right of the box. Now with Talbutt fully committed, Daniels pushed the ball to the right of the Cavalier goalkeeper, leaving Talbutt out of position and an open net. Fortunately for the Cavs, Daniels’ touch proved to be a little too long, which gave senior defender Jenna Peterson time to beat Daniels to the ball and clear it to get the Cavs out of trouble.
After that, the next true threat from either team wouldn’t come till Winwood’s goal ended things only three minutes into overtime.
The game-winning play started with a free kick for the Cavs, which Peterson took way out near the midline. Far away or not though, Peterson bombed a ball into the box, which Winwood flicked in with her head from 10 yards out.
The score erased the Eagles strong second half in a second, as the Concordia women remained a perfect 5-0-0 at the new Tuominen Yard.
“It was another good learning experience and a character test just figuring out how to win a game,” said Landy. “We had several people step out a little earlier than normal, but learning what your team looks like is part of that early-season grind. It’s a team game and everyone needs to contribute.”
Earlier in the match, the Cavaliers opened the scoring when Hannah Scott broke free for a goal in the 26th minute.
Like their eventual game-winner, the Cavaliers started the play off a free kick. Senior Indigo Recker took the kick this time and launched a ball to midfielder Hannah Kimsey up the right side, who then passed the ball on to Scott on the left-side of the box. Kimsey’s pass drew out the Eagles’ goalkeeper, but Scott beat her to the ball and chipped in a shot from 10 yards out.
Overall, Concordia outshot the Eagles 16-to-9, which included a 6-to-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Tori Talbutt played another complete game in goal for the Cavs, while Bekah Garvin matched Talbutt with a complete game in goal for the Eagles.
Next up, Concordia plays its first road match of the season when it travels to face NCAA Division III Willamette on Sunday, Sept. 9. Kickoff for that match is set for 6 p.m.
