TRINIDAD, Calif. –
Southern Oregon claimed the individual titles in both the men’s and women’s races, and the Raider men placed first and the women second in the team standings at the Humboldt State Invitational Saturday morning at Patrick’s Point State Park.

Eric Avila completed the 8,000-meter course in 24:48.24 to lead a group of four Raider finishers in the top six. The top-ranked Southern Oregon men’s team  totaled 23 points to fend off host Humboldt State (33) for the team title, followed by Fresno Pacific (98), Simpson (107) and College of the Redwoods (132).

Summer Cano dominated the women’s field with a 27-second win, finishing the 6,000-meter course in 22:00.04. The Raiders totaled 65 points to finish behind NCAA Div. II No. 22 Humboldt State (29 points) and head of Sonoma State (70), Pacific (81), Fresno Pacific (138) and Simpson (151).

The Southern Oregon men placed six runners in the top 10, with Tyler VanDyke placing third (25:19.38), Brett Hornig taking fourth (25:19.89) and Scott McIntyre taking sixth (25:35.9). Nathan Normo finished ninth (25:49.51) and Jared Hixon placed 10th (25:52.79). The Raiders’ depth showed throughout the race, as all 15 SOU runners finished in the top 36.

Running short-handed as several student-athletes nurse early-season injuries, the 13th-ranked Raider women sent seven runners onto the course and had four finish among the top 16. Behind Cano, Jessie Rozario took seventh (23:11.89), Anne Hagy placed 13th (23:38.11) and Kattarina Korpela finished 16th (23:49.58).

“I’m very proud of how both teams competed,” SOU head coach Grier Gatlin said. “We held out three of our top seven on the women’s side and still were able to place second, which indicates we have some depth. The men’s depth was good as well, and it’s what allowed us to win the race.”

Southern Oregon will have three weeks to return to full strength before its next race, as the Raiders’ next competition will be the Stanford Invite on Sept. 29.
