Cavs Add Nine NAIA National Qualifiers at UW Invite
RESULTS
SEATTLE—Competing for the second time in three weeks at the Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington, the Concordia track & field teams added nine NAIA qualifiers, including five that hit the automatic standard, at the UW Indoor Invite.
The Concordia women earned all five of the NAIA ‘A’ qualifiers with NyEma Sims in the 400, Junia Limage and Linsie Michels in the 800, Mikel Elliott in the 5,000 and Sharayah Kenady in the weight throw.
Limage, the defending NAIA national champion in the 800, placed third in the final section and sixth overall with a school record 2:10.95. Limage’s time defeated her previous Concordia best mark of 2:11.39 which she established en route to the national title in 2011. Michels, meanwhile, finished in 10th place overall with a 2:12.75, more than two full seconds faster than her previous indoor best and six seconds ahead of the NAIA ‘A’ standard.
With a 58.34 in the 400, NyEma Sims chopped her previous season best in the 400 to upgrade to automatic status after posting a provisional mark of 59.56 two weeks ago in Seattle. Sims is also automatically qualified in the 200 this season.
Moving up to the 5,000, Elliott placed 15th overall with a 17:50.13 in her indoor debut in the event, turning in an ‘A’ standard performance. Teammate Sarah Whybark finished with an 18:30.05 to hit the ‘B’ barrier.
Concordia’s final automatic mark came in the women’s weight throw where Kenady tossed more than a two-foot personal record with a 54-4 (16.56m) to place ninth overall and clinch a return trip to indoor nationals.
Catherine Sims, already qualified in the 400, reached the provisional standard in the 200 with a 25.45.
The CU men’s action was highlighted by a pair of school record performances by sprinter Andre Washington. On Friday, Washington dashed to a 22.50 in the 200-meter race which eclipsed the former school mark of 22.80. Turning to Saturday, the junior clocked an indoor career best of 49.13 to batter the former CU record of 49.47 and earn the provisional standard.
Roman Kirkov notched the final qualifier for the Cavs with a 4:21.99 in the mile which chopped nearly nine seconds off his previous season best from earlier in January and dipped below the B’B’ standard of 4:20.00 by .01.
Additional career indoor bests for the Cavs went to: Eric Tolento in the 60 (7.12) and the 200 (23.34), DeAndre Jackson in the 60 (7.15), Ben Foubert in the 3,000 (8:54.48), Ethan Moore in the high jump (6-5 1/2) and Catherine Sims in the 60 (7.98).
The Cavaliers return to action inside the Demspey Indoor when they compete at the University of Washington Husky Classic on Feb. 8-9.
