SALEM, Ore. – Corban University senior men's basketball player Marcus Butler has been nominated for selection as the "Dark Horse Dunker" in this year's State Farm College Slam Dunk & Three-Point Championships in Atlanta.
The "Dark Horse Dunker" is an unknown, under-the-radar player whose "hops and creativity belong on the national stage."
"Marcus is one of the hardest working players on our team this season," said head coach Justin Sherwood. "He is one of those 'under-the-radar' type players that can surprise a lot of people with his quickness and ability to get to the basket for highlight-type finishes."
To be nominated, the player must be a senior during the 2012-13 season and post a YouTube video featuring footage from practice, in-game highlights, or any other video evidence that showcases their aerial prowess to the State Farm College Slam Dunk & Three-Point Contest Facebook page by January 28th.
After all the nominees have been collected and the Top 16 dunkers have been chosen by the contest's selection committee, fans will have the opportunity to vote in a bracket-style voting competition to select this year's Dark Horse Dunker.
Fans can help their favorite player advance to the bracket-style portion by 'liking' or posting comments about their video on the College Slam Facebook page or the YouTube comment section located directly underneath the video.
The past two years, the Dark Horse Dunker went on to win the entire College Slam Dunk contest. Illinois College's Jacob Tucker took home the title in 2011 and Martin Methodist's James Justice captured the trophy last year in New Orleans. Incredibly, both have since become members of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters.
While most of the participants are selected from nationally well-known players who've appeared on ESPN many times before, the final candidate is selected by a fan vote on Facebook.
Starting in February, fans can visit the College Slam Facebook Page to begin voting for the player that they think is most deserving of the title of "Dark Horse Dunker." In order to vote, fans must 'LIKE' the page first.
"Marcus has put in a lot of time and effort to improve his game over the past four years and this would be a fitting way to end his career," said Sherwood. "I urge fans to visit Facebook and view Marcus' video so that he can have the opportunity to compete in Atlanta."
The winner will compete in the State Farm Slam Dunk & Three-Point Championships in Atlanta over Final Four weekend, airing April 4 on ESPN.
