PORTLAND, Ore.—
With one of its best rounds in school history, the Concordia men’s golf team jumped from fourth to second place on the final day of action at the Cavalier Classic, played at Heron Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday.

Concordia (297-285-281—863) improved in each round of the two-day tournament for a three-round total of 1-under 863, which represents the third-best three-round tally by the Cavaliers in program history. The Cavs fired an 847 (278-278-291) during the 2007-08 season for its all-time best result.

The hot finish helped CU surpass Northwest Christian and the University of Victoria in the team standings but fell a single stroke shy of tournament champion Spokane C.C. (291-286-285—862). Victoria (295-284-290—869) held off Northwest Christian (301-277-295—873), who carded a school three-round record at the event, by four strokes for third place.

The previous record in a three-round tournament for the Beacons was an 893 in this same event three years earlier. NCU's 277 in Monday's second round is the lowest score in CCC history for a single round, breaking the former record, held by Concordia, by one stroke. The Cavaliers have a program-best single-round score of 275, which was set in 2005-06, before the CCC sponsored golf.

Shooting a 12-under 204, NCU’s Tyler Falk captured medalist honors by a whopping seven strokes over Northern Idaho’s Angus Montgomery (73-67-71—211) and Victoria’s Bruce Tomie (72-69-70—211). John-Michael Pilot (73-68-71—212) led Warner Pacific by finishing play tied for third place with Victoria’s Jesse Teron (70-73-69—212).

Falk established a new three-round record for the Beacons, besting the old mark by six strokes. His 64 on Monday was four strokes better than his own NCU record and it tied two other players for the best score ever in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

Three Cavaliers finished inside the top 10 with Jesse Heinly (78-64-73—215) and Tanner Maahs (72-76-67—215) sharing seventh place and Kolton Kyne (77-72-69—218) tying for 10th. Both Maahs and Kyne set collegiate bests for a single round as the duo had previously recorded 70s as their personal record.

After back-to-back 75s on Monday, Ryan Melnychuk (75-75-72—222) dropped three strokes to placed 17th overall while Jess Wingett (73-74-79—226) rounded out the team in 23rd place.

Concordia, Warner Pacific and Northwest Christianwill return to action on Oct. 7-8 when they return to Cascade Collegiate Conference competition at the Warner Pacific Invitational which will take place at Glendoveer Golf Course.
