RESULTS
PORTLAND, Ore.—Capturing her ninth career tournament win, Concordia’s Sunny Powers (79-71-80—230) fired a 14-over 230 for a one-stroke victory at the Cavalier Classic, held at Heron Lakes Golf Course on Monday.
Powers shared the first-day lead with Victoria’s Cari Chow (77-73-81—231) but held on for the win as Chow turned in a 9-over 81 on the final tour of the 5,952-yard course.
Chow, however, would lead Victoria (321-305-323—949) to a team championship as the Viks led wire-to-wire en route to the 30-stroke win over Concordia (338-319-322—979). Concordia’s (339-357-336—1,031) second team placed third overall while Trinity Lutheran (384-367-387—1,138), Warner Pacific (384-380-379—1,143) and Northern Idaho (395-390-376—1,161) rounded out the team scoring.
All four CU scorers finished within four strokes of each other on the final round with Jennifer Gibbons (91-81-77—249) posting the strongest round of the day with a 5-over 77 to finish in a tie for eighth place along with teammate Kelsey Whiles (83-85-81—249). Competing in just her second collegiate tournament, Whiles’ score chopped eight strokes off her total from her debut at Oregon Tech two weeks ago.
Abby Brennon (89-82-84—255) and Holly Winburn (87-89-87—263) rounded out CU’s first team in 12th and 15th place, respectively.
Warner Pacific was led by Scotti Jo Helmick (89-86-84—259) in 13th place. Knight teammates Kendall Cowley (89-98-97—284) and Taylor Kautz (97-93-99—289) finished back-to-back in the standings in 21st and 22nd place.
Northwest Christian’s Haley Partridge (84-81-82—247) tied for fifth overall and was the second finisher among Cascade Collegiate Conference opponents. Also golfing for the Beacons were Ashley Steiner (95-95-92—282), who closed out the tournament with a career-low 92 to claim 20th place, and freshman Tierra Davis (106-112-102—320), who finished off her collegiate golf debut in 30th.
The Concordia women’s team will return to the links on Friday to begin the two-day Saint Martin’s Invitational which will be held at Tumwater Valley Golf Course in Olympia, Wash. The Cavs will be joined by NCU and WPC when the three teams continue its fall CCC schedule at the Warner Pacific Invitational on Oct. 7-8 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland.
