VICTORIA, B.C. – Buoyed by 37 points from Terrell Evans, the University of Victoria defeated Concordia 102-94 in the team's second game of the UBC Invitational tournament hosted at War Memorial.

Concordia defeated the host Thunderbirds on Thursday and will conclude the three-day tournament against Thompson Rivers on Saturday. Opening tip is set for 3 p.m.

After trailing 22-20 at the end of the first period and by five points early in the second, Concordia reversed the spread to go up 37-32 on a Willy Ligon (Corona, Calif./Centennial H.S.) 3-pointer with just over five minutes remaining. The two teams traded buckets with the Vikes boasting a 45-42 advantage at the half in the high-tempo bout.

Early in the third, an Adam Herman (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) layup and a Thomas Piece free throw make squared the contest at 49-49 for Concordia, but a 17-5 run by Victoria over a six-minute span provided a 14-point lead with just 1:20 left in the third quarter.

With five late points by Thomas Pierce (Gary, Ind./Roosevelt H.S.), the Cavs managed to cut the lead to eight (69-61) heading into the final period.

Victoria would regain control in the fourth, eventually pulling ahead by as many as 15 points following an Evans layup with seven minutes remaining. With late baskets by Ligon and Herman, the Cavs would play well down the final stretch to climb back to within eight at the final horn.

"Give Victoria a lot of credit. Every time we made a run they answered," CU head coach Brad Barbarick said. "We will need to bounce back in an afternoon game tomorrow. This has been a great experience for our guys playing in Canada with international rules. This trip will only help us as we progress into our season."

Going 12-of-18 from the field, Herman led the Cavs with 30 points, and added a team-high eight rebounds. Pierce ended the night perfect from the floor, making all 11 attempts for a 24-point performance.
University of Victoria shot 57.1 percent from the floor, just ahead of the Concordia clip of 55.9 percent. Victoria also finished with a 36 to 27 advantage on the boards with Evans finishing one rebound shy of a double-double. Evans connected on 13 of 18 attempts from the field and was an efficient 10 of 11 from the free throw line.

"We ran into a well-prepared Victoria team tonight," CU head coach Brad Barbarick said. "We had impressive offensive play from Thomas Pierce (Gary, Ind./Roosevelt H.S.) and Adam Herman (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) but did not have the defensive consistency tonight to get the win."
