WOMEN'S RESULTS
ESTACADA – Eric Avila cleared the field by 30 seconds and the second-ranked Southern Oregon University men's cross country team cruised to a team win at the Lewis & Clark Invitational on Saturday morning at McIver State Park.
The Raider men put five runners in the top 10 of the men's meet, which featured 13 teams and 138 total entrants. The 23rd-ranked SOU women got a third-place showing out of Summer Cano and were fourth of 12 teams.
Avila, who was the NAIA runner of the week after his only previous race of the season at Stanford, completed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 36 seconds. Eric Ghelfi was fifth in 25:51, Zach Boyd-Helm sixth (25:25), Kevin Jorgensen eighth (25:29) and Tyler VanDyke 10th (25:37) in his first meet of the year.
The average time of SOU's top five was 25:17 – more than 20 seconds better than second-place Carleton and a minute better than third-place Concordia, a Cascade Conference foe.
Trevor Lynn, Matt Battaglia, Cary Dunagan, Hector Aleman and Jace Hinesly all finished within 30 seconds of that pack, too.
Cano came in at 22:27 in the women's 6,000-meter race, just 12 seconds behind champion Christina Williams of Whitworth. Alexandra Rudd placed eighth in 22:50 and Rebecca Lupescu was 25th in 23:35 to highlight the rest of the Raider effort.
Whitworth won the women's race ahead of Lewis & Clark and Linfield.
SOU will race next at the Oregon State Beaver Classic next Friday at Avery Park in Corvallis.
