Eagles Stop Cavs in Second Overtime
PORTLAND, Ore.—With less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Northwest University's Adam Loga and Mackenzie Samuelsen connected for a golden goal to stun Concordia University 1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
After taking four shots in the first 17 minutes of play, Northwest (9-4-0, 7-2-0 CCC) was limited to just four more shots over the span of the next 90 minutes of action but capitalized on a long ball from Loga which caught the Concordia (9-4-0, 6-3-0 CCC) defense off guard for the game-winner in the 108th minute.
Stepping in for a steal in Concordia's attacking third, Loga one-timed a 45-yard lob to a dashing Samuelsen, who then chipped the ball over CU goalkeeper
Scott Gross (Gladstone, Ore./Gladstone H.S.) for the lone goal of the match.
Northwest, who defeated Concordia 3-2 in Kirkland, Wash., last month, outshot the Cavs 5-to-4 in the first half but managed just a single shot in each of the next three periods. Concordia, meanwhile, outshot the Eagles in the second half alone with nine opportunities for a 19-to-8 overall advantage in the match. The Cavs also managed a 12-to-8 edge in corner kicks on their home pitch.
Northwest goalkeeper came up big on several occasions, finishing with a season-best 12 saves against the CCC's top-scoring offense.
The Cavaliers produced several opportunities throughout regulation to avoid overtime.
Michael Chamberlain (Wailua, Hawaii/Island H.S.) gave CU its best chance at the go-ahead goal on a header on the 76th which ricocheted off the crossbar. The overtime loss for Concordia was the first for the team since 2009 when the Cavs dropped a 3-2 affair against British Columbia.
Concordia will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23 when it hosts CCC leading Corban University (10-2-0, 7-0-2 CCC) at Tuominen Yard. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. against the Warriors.
