PORTLAND, Ore.—After being held scoreless for the first 66 minutes, the No. 4-ranked Concordia women's soccer team went on to post a 3-0 win at home against Eastern Oregon in both team's Cascade Collegiate Conference season opener on Thursday.

With the win, Concordia improved to 7-1-1 on the season while Eastern Oregon dropped their first match of the year and move to 4-1-1 overall. Concordia will host College of Idaho on Saturday, Oct. 4 while the Mountaineers will remain in Portland to face Warner Pacific College.

Despite accumulating a 9 to 1 shot advantage and 6 to 0 edge in corner kicks in the first half, the Concordia offense was stymied by EOU goalkeeper Kailey Moss and the rest of the Mountaineer defense.

CU senior Alex Blalock (Flagstaff, Ariz./Coconino H.S.) presented the best opportunity in the opening half with a near-post header in the 22nd minute which Moss, perfectly positioned, gathered without hesitation.

The Cavaliers broke the draught at the 66:00 minute following a penalty kick due to a handball by the EOU defense on an unfortunate bounce.

Moss made a diving save on McKayla Madison (Bend, Ore./Mountain View H.S.)'s PK attempt, but the junior midfielder continued her approach to find the ball bouncing directly back to her which enabled an easy put in from five yards out.

Minutes later, the Mountaineers quickly responded with two of its four shot attempts. At the 69:46 mark, Shelby Tucker cracked a 28-yarder that was stifled by the CU defense. Off the shot, Tori Fedora collected the loose ball and unleashed an attempt from 20 yards out which sailed left.

Concordia managed its second goal in the 80th minute as Moss was once again foiled after making contact with a shot. Stationed near the left post after a cross from Hannah Kimsey (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.), freshman Bobbi Eckler (Vancouver, Wash./Union H.S.) fired a shot to the near side which Moss was able to get in front of but the rocket ricocheted off her body and just inside the post.

"It's always a different vibe in conference play," Landy said. "Goals are going to be hard to score so you have to capitalize on every bounce or scramble in the box."

Down 2-0, the Mountaineers strung several dangerous attacking runs in the final minutes, including one sequence following a corner kick in the 84th minute with the ball headed around several times inside the 8-yard box before CU goalkeeper Olivia Brock (Olympia, Wash./Olympia H.S.) managed to punch it out of the mixer.

"Up until the last minutes, we did a pretty good job of limited their dangerous chance," Landy said. "Olivia did an excellent job of playing her position and was able to defend some tricky crosses."

In the 88th minute, Moss thwarted a 3-on-1 Cavalier attack with Ashley Ames (Liberty Lake, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) firing from 16 yards out. Concordia managed to up its final score count with just over a minute remaining as Ames assisted Kimsey in one of the final possessions.

Concordia ended the contest with a 2 to 3 lead in total shots and 10 to 3 gap in corner kicks. Moss came up with nine saves.

"EOU played us well last year and they were very organized tonight," Landy said. "They are certainly an improving team that has a plan and they showed it tonight with their performance. It will be the same sort of thing on Saturday as College of Idaho always plays us hard."
