PORTLAND, Ore.—Hosting the opening round of the CCC Championships for the second straight year, Concordia University came away with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-18) win against Oregon Tech on Tuesday night.
With the win, Concordia (22-6) will advance to the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank which will be held at College of Idaho on Nov. 15-16 in Caldwell, Idaho. Concordia, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will face No. 2-seeded Eastern Oregon University in the semifinal on Friday.
The host Coyotes, as the top seed, will face No. 4-seed Southern Oregon in the second semifinal with the winners moving on to vie for the tournament championship and a berth into the NAIA National Championships on Saturday.
Oregon Tech (15-18) looked poised to capture a win in the opening set, taking a 13-11 lead before the two teams battled their way to ties on seven occasions from 13-13 to 19-19.
Ashley Jibby (Post Falls, Idaho/Post Falls H.S.) gave CU a 20-19 lead on a successful swing while
Amanda Goringe (Aloha, Ore./Aloha H.S.) followed with a combined block with
Jackie Stein (Portland, Ore./Westview H.S.) and a kill of her own to help the home team to a three-point lead (22-19). With the score 24-21m Goringe would finish the set after a set by
Lindsay Mangan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina H.S.).
The Owls earned the initial point in the second set off a Madisen Garlie kill but would soon find themselves facing a significant deficit as the Cavs went on to produce a 10-3 advantage behind three kills from
Mariah Raudsepp (Dundee, Ore./C.S. Lewis Academy). Oregon Tech managed to pull within four points (16-12) on a block from Garlie and Mykala Rubey, but the Cavs put together a 9-3 run to finish the set and take the commanding 2-0 overall lead.
Maintaining its momentum, Concordia generated a 12-6 lead with Stein and Mangan getting into the act with two kills each. The teams played fairly even the rest of the way as CU would close out the contest with the seven-point win.
Stein led all players with 10 kills on the night, two more than teammates Goringe and Raudsepp. Three Cavs reached double figures in digs with Jibby leading the way with an even dozen and immediately followed by 10 digs each from
Melanie Miller (Hillsboro, Ore./Liberty H.S.) and
Shantel Gritsch (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas H.S.). Mangan led all players with 31 assists.
Garlie led Oregon Tech with nine kills with Marlee Smith the next owl at six terminations. Victoria Porter tallied a team-high 12 assists while Kelsey Sampson and Marie Boumann joined Smith with 14 digs each.
