PORTLAND, Ore.—After setting a school record with 132 points in a game last week, the Concordia men's basketball nearly matched the total again with a 117-67 win over New Hope Christian on Thursday.
Five Concordia (5-1) players reached double figures against the Deacons with
Willy Ligon (Corona, Calif./Centennial H.S.) and
Adam Herman (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) leading the team with 21 and 20 points respectively.
Kory Kirwan (Hillsboro, Ore./Glencoe H.S.) and
Thomas Pierce (Gary, Ind./Roosevelt H.S.) added 18 each while
Marquis Matthews (Spanaway, Wash./Bethel H.S.) registered 10 points in the blow-out win.
The Deacons kept the game close through the first nine minutes of play, even tying the contest at 16-16 on a pair of Cody Dismukes free throws at the 12:52 mark. A
Thomas Pierce (Gary, Ind./Roosevelt H.S.) jumper with 6:57 remaining, however, gave the home team a double-digit lead that it would not relinquish.
Up by 14 at the half with the score 53-39, the Cavaliers turned up its defensive intensity over the final 20 minutes, holding the Deacons to 29 percent shooting out of the break to go on to the 50-point win. Concordia shot 56.6 percent from the floor with Herman going 8-of-9 from the floor and Pierce 8-of-12. The Cavs outrebounded the Deacons 59-to-28 with Kirwan and
