REDDING, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon University concluded the Simpson Classic by defeating host school, Simpson University, 69-47, Saturday evening. Brittney Newcomb scored a game-high 29 points to lead EOU to its fifth win of the season.
EOU led from the start and never looked back against the Red Hawks. The Mountaineers opened the game by scoring the first nine points of the game and leading 9-0 after the first four minutes of action. Simpson answered right back by scoring the next five points to trim the lead down to four points, 9-5.
Eastern Oregon continued to play solid defense, which held the Red Hawks to shoot 23 percent from the floor in the first half. As EOU was playing solid defense, the shooting started to heat up and EOU built a lead of 11 points, 23-12, after a jumper by Newcomb.
The Mountaineers continued to extend their lead to 17 points after a three pointer by Newcomb. Eastern Oregon took the 17 point lead, 35-17, into halftime.
Simpson made a little run to start the second half and cut the Mountaineers lead to 13 points after a Nichole Jones jumper. However, Eastern Oregon extended its lead back to 19 points in the next two minutes of the half, to take a 45-26 lead.
The Mountaineers continued to add to its lead and it grew to 24 points, 65-41, with 3:41 left in the game after a Maloree Moss free throw. The Red Hawks had no answer and EOU defeated Simpson, 69-47.
EOU returns to action on Nov. 23 when the Mountaineers host Walla Walla University. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
