KLAMATH FALLS – Minus two of their top scorers in the backcourt, the Southern Oregon University women's basketball team turned to its frontcourt standout in an 80-72 win over William Jessup on Friday afternoon at the Midland Empire Classic.
Carly Meister controlled the paint with career-highs of 27 points and 16 rebounds for the Raiders (6-1 overall), going 12-for-18 from the field. Allison Gida went for 14 points, five assists and five rebounds in her first start of the season.
The Raiders, playing without injured guards Ashley Claussen and Bree Park, had to overcome 28 turnovers.
William Jessup (3-5) was led by Ashley Rose's 21 points and six assists. But Rose, like the rest of the Warriors, couldn't get it going from the outside. They entered the game 12th in the NAIA in 3-point makes and ended the day with a 2-for-17 mark from outside and a 28-for-72 showing from the field.
The Raiders shot 46.6 percent (27-for-58). Kristen Schoenherr, the reigning Cascade Conference player of the week, had 14 points and five rebounds and Autumn Durand went 5-for-9 from the field with 10 points, and both added three blocks and two steals on the defensive end. Brenna Anderson contributed 12 rebounds.
Taylor Borba chipped in 13 points and Nicole McDonald had 11 for William Jessup, which failed to take advantage of 14 extra shot attempts.
SOU will return to Danny Miles Court on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tilt with California Maritime.
