EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Spencer Coleman did what no other Northwest Christian University men’s basketball player had done in 23 years on Monday night, going for 27 points and 21 rebounds as the Beacons defeated cross-town rival New Hope Christian, 78-50.
Coleman becomes the first Beacon to cross the 20/20 plateau since November 11, 1989 when Mat Sand had 20 points and a school-record 22 rebounds against Puget Sound Christian. Coleman’s 21 is the second-highest in school history.
Head Coach Luke Jackson, who picks up the first home victory of his young career said, “Spencer was pretty dominant tonight. He is a special athlete and he did a great job buying into the game plan tonight offensively and defensively.
An extra wrinkle for Coleman was the fact that he got to go up against his brother, Alexander Coleman, a junior guard for the Deacons who was assigned to guard Spencer for most of the evening. “First time playing on the court with him since high school and the first time ever playing against him,” said Coleman, “so it was just real fun to have family here to support both of us.”
The Beacons got off to a slow start, battling back-and-forth with the Deacons throughout the first half. Neither team led by more than four points for the first 15 minutes and NHCC held a 21-20 lead with four minutes to play. NCU started getting hot towards the end, using a 10-1 run to close out the half, fueled by seven points from Coleman.
NCU never looked back, opening the second half on a 19-3 run in the first eight minutes to build a 24-point lead. The Beacons led by as many as 31 before claiming the 28-point victory.
Jackson said, “New Hope is a very scrappy team. They have quick guards and they play tough. After a slow start we did a great job of defending and rebounding which led to some easy baskets. Once we were able to get up by about ten points, they would have a sense of urgency and start rushing their offense, which they did.”
The Beacons (4-1) were led by Coleman’s 10-for-16 shooting and game-high four assists. Nick Sullivan posted 15 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field. Travis Pacos added 14 points and Forrest Stolk, playing his first game against his former team, added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. NCU out-rebounded the Deacons, 54-28 and shot 45.3% from the floor.
New Hope (2-9) was led by the hot hand of TJ Little, shooting 5-for-6 from three-point range to end the night with 21 points. He was the only player in double-figures for the Deacons, who shot 32% from the field. Coleman added eight points, six rebounds, and a game-high four steals.
NCU returns to action on Tuesday as they welcome Simpson University into the Morse Event Center at 7:30 pm.
